Effective Listening and Sensitivity
Atchison (2006) defines three types of listening. The first is hearing and reacting (selective listening). Number two is engaging and focusing (active listening), and the third is accepting and supporting (reflective listening). Using these three types of listening, give an example of when you have experienced each type within or outside of the workplace. respond to post two peers . The initial post should be a minimum of 150 words. If you use any source outside of your own thoughts, you should reference that source. Let’s discuss the reading for this week.
Chapter 3 – covers Decision Making. There is a quote at the beginning of the chapter that states “You miss 100% of the shots you never take. “ Let’s talk about that statement by Wayne Gretzky. Do you know who Wayne Gretzky was? He was one of the greatest hockey players that ever played the game. I believe his statement means if you never take a chance or put yourself out there you cannot be in the game. As a supervisor you need to be engaged and involved. An important framework for you to consider is the decision-making process. The decision-making process includes defining the problem, analyzing the problem, developing alternatives, evaluating and selecting the best decision, and then take action. You will need to follow up and evaluate the impact of the decision. Did it work or what did I learn for the future. In my years of leadership seeking advice and guidance from others is an important part of being a leader. You need to make sure you make the best decision to meet the needs of the organization. These decisions may not always be favorable for everyone.
Chapter 4 covers Coordinating Organizational Activities. The chapter discusses the importance of coordination and cooperation within and outside an organization. Which does not always happen but, we try.
Chapter 5 –covers Communicating. There is a quote at the beginning of this chapter that states “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” George Bernard Shaw. Think about that for a minute. Effective communication is a two way street without communication your organization will not be successful. Let us spend some time on this topic. I really enjoy and learn a great deal about myself reading and watching educational opportunities. I found a very interesting video that takes a look at communication. Please review the following Tedtalk – “How to speak so people want to listen by Justin Treasure”. A very powerful presentation!
. After you watch it, do some self-reflection on what you learned to improve yourself. All leaders or supervisors need to self-reflect to improve.
The last chapter for the week 6 –looks at the Legal Aspects Of The Healthcare Setting. Spend some time learning about legal issues described in the chapter it is very helpful. Being prepared for potential legal actions is a necessity for all of us!
