There is a great deal of controversy today over freedom of speech on college campuses.
There are FOUR parts to this assignment. Please make sure that you scroll all the way
down to cover all four parts.
1. The following articles argue in favor of freedom of speech with few limits. Select the
best argument from each of the following articles and summarize that argument. Use

3. Go to https://www.thefire.org/
In the search box, enter the words “Disinvitation Database.” Once the search produces
a list, click on the first entry “Disinvitation Database.” Now, enter 2019 or 2020 in the
search box.
Note: Political “Left” generally refers to more liberal ideology, and “Right” refers to
conservative ideology. When the column says “from the left” or “from the right,” it
refers to the political philosophies of those who pushed for the disinvitation. So, if it
says, “from the right,” it means that the push to disinvite the speaker came from those
students whose views were more conservative than the speaker’s views. If the
disinvitation came “from the left,” it means that the push to disinvite the speaker came
from those students whose views were more liberal than the speaker’s views.
Choose 2 disinvitation events. Choose one in which the disinvitation came from the
right and one in which the disinvitation came from the left.
Now, research the 2 events and explain what happened. Next, explain whether you
would have favored disinviting the speaker, allowing the speaker to speak, or some
other option.
4. Assume that you are in charge of writing the “free speech” policy for Houston
Community College’s student handbook. Write a policy of 50-100 words explaining how
free speech will be addressed on campus.
