The Best and worst of Humanity Revealed during the COVID-19 Pandemic
“THE COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the best- and the worst- of humanity and has exposed the fault lines, inequalities, injustices, and contradictions in our modern world,” Kanaga Raja (WHO, 2020). Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in an increased mortality rate globally, but the virus has acted as an instrument of exposing the real nature of humans in the world. Since the emergence of the virus in December 2019, most people have been behaving in various ways that define humanity’s nature in the modern world. Some people have been making a significant sacrifice to protect themselves from the coronavirus and safeguard the other community members. The sharing spirit has risen to a normal routine among most communities globally.
Within the COVID-19 pandemic, humanity’s best has been portrayed through sacrifices that individuals are making globally. Health workers have continued to support the coronavirus victim, exposing their lives to the risk of contracting the virus, or even death. Despite such risks, health workers have been sacrificing their lives, time, and families to serve to save the victim’s lives. “Although reports are making headlines on how health workers are contracting and dying due to the COVID-19, humanity’s spirit continues to motivate them to continue serving” (Morales, 2020). Besides the risk of contracting the virus, the health workers are also sacrificing their time, relationships, and property to serves. They are working day and night, abandoning their family’s business to ensure that coronavirus victims have attendants.
Moreover, the pandemic has also threatened the economic pillar of nations and individuals globally. However, economic impacts have been neutralized through nations’ unity and support. Developed nations have provided grants to the less developed nation that have been at the forefront of helping their citizens. Besides, individuals have been giving financial, material, and service support amidst the coronavirus pandemic. “Everywhere, community coordinators have been stepping up to provide food for those in need comprising children who lost access to regular meals once schools closed” (Skey & Jiménez-Martínez, 2020).
The consensus between the public and government in social policies aiming at reversing the situation is another proof of humanity. Compliance with social policies has revealed the spirit of love and care among people. The majority are adhering to the social policies safeguarding other members of the community. Quarantined individuals are taking keen note not to spread the virus to other people.
Nevertheless, the pandemic has also revealed the worst of human behavior. During the coronavirus, pandemic racism has been rising in the world. Research has revealed that most people of color in America’s united states and other countries face racial discrimination. Police have been brutally killing people in the United States of America, revealing humanity’s negative aspects.
According to Harari Noah, humans’ best defense against pathogens is information, not being isolated. (Harari, 2020). In the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, people were regularly informed on how to reverse the situation. Nevertheless, some people were ignoring the social policies aimed at reversing the situation. Youths were giving money, hanging, and defying the social policies, threatening the entire world. Some people were exchanging money without sanitizing, exposing their colleagues to the possibility of a coronavirus attack. Besides, people are still having parties and public gatherings, which exposes the community and their nation to the vulnerability of the COVID-19 attack.
During this Coronavirus pandemic, the unique collaboration will help in reversing and reducing the virus’s impact. It is a time when people take their roles without failing to enhance the community’s continued safety. It is also important to appreciate medical workers continue risking their lives in an environment filled with vulnerabilities of being infected by Covid-19 and probably dying. Somehow, Walter mentions this in his passage. “I felt as if I was wasting my youth doing nothing, so it struck me when I told myself. I am really in my room waiting for days to go by, just for them to be the same.” (Walter, 2020). If things do not get better, things will be, as Walter defines, being bored if people do not collaborate to handle the issue.
