Unemployment and Discrimination in the Labor Market

In “Changes,” Tupac samples the 1986 hit “The Way It Is” by Bruce Hornsby. Both songs address many social issues, the most notable of which are discrimination, unemployment, and the civil rights movement. Carefully listen to both songs.

Bruce Hornsby’s original lyrics point to discrimination as a fact of life. He sings of “a law in ’64.” What law was passed in 1964? 

Have any other laws been passed since then to reduce discrimination?

In the video below, Tupac adds his own take on the issue of discrimination when he makes the claim that “the way it is” with very little hope for change.
