You will select one nursing theory and one counseling theory to best guide your practice in psychotherapy. You will explain why you selected these theories and support your approach with evidence-based literature. by Evelyn Tomlin, Helen Erikson, and Mary Ann. The reason as to why I have picked this theory is because it helps in promoting the capability of nurses to care for the patients based on their unique healthcare needs. The kind of therapeutic relationship developed between the patient and the nurse is influenced by the nurse and patient’s goals, awareness of the patient unique needs, trust, and respect (Khalilabad et al., 2020).
This theoretical model acknowledges that every patient has a unique personal perception of their life. The modelling procedures are applied in developing a clear picture of the to help in promoting the process of understanding every patient based on their experience and perception. Concerning the role modelling, patients are encouraged to achieve, uphold and promote their health as directed by the nurse. The process supports the ability of the nurses to prepare intervention that facilitates healing upon implementation. During my practice of psychotherapy, the modelling and role-modelling theory will be applied by encouraging and confirming patient strengths, developing trust, and setting mutually attainable healthcare goals (Passi & Johnson, 2016).
Counseling Theory
Concerning my practicum experience, the most preferred counselling theory is a cognitive-behavioral approach. This theory involves the use of cognition to influence patients to understand their behavior. It helps the patients understand the negative side of the behaviors so that they can change them into a better one. This model is helping in the process of changing distorted behaviors and thinking to help in the improvement of their overall emotional and mental well-being (Stets, et al., 2020).
The reason for selecting the theories and the objectives based on the practicum experience
Goals and Objectives
The personal goals of the practicum experience are to handle various needs of the patients to help in the promotion of the healing environment, to ensure that the theoretical guideline adopted is helping to attain maximum healthcare outcome of the patient, and promoting the ability of the patient to realize maximum healing process through nurturing them on the effective healthcare behaviors to be adopted through cognitive-behavioral therapy. The modelling and the re-modelling theories are important in ensuring that there is the ability to help in nurturing and providing healthcare services to the patients with a consideration to their unique needs. The theories are important in ensuring that the type of care developed is based on understanding the experience of the patients.
Timeline of practicum activities
I know that during this first week I am supposed to be able to observe at least for five hours, but on the other hand my preceptor was very comfortable with me doing patient care, I observed the first two patients and then I started to participate in patient care. I think that although I was extremely nervous the first day of clinical, my preceptor’s positive attitude helped me become more comfortable with caring for the patient.
