For this discussion board, I will be answering topic A!
After reading Chapter 1, I have seen that the major challenges facing organizations today are: globalization, people skills, innovation and change, sustainability, customer service, workforce diversity, and economic factors. When you understand these challenges and know how to handle them, your business’s organization will be stronger. Customer service is a big one. A lot of businesses struggle with customer service and when you can please your customers and their demands, your business will thrive. Globalization is another big one to understand and it is so important. Globalization is the process by which the world has become increasingly connected through trade, culture, technology, and politics. Business is all about connections especially with people outside of your local community. We are all striving to build more sustainable and responsible global markets by taking into consideration the environmental factors. We all need to take into account the effects our decisions we are making on our organizations, community, and environment.
We need to understand human psychology, with this skill our organizations will thrive. Studying behavior in individual, group, and organizational settings is important. Once you can identify certain behaviors in organizations, it helps you break it down in groups big or small, and just single individuals. This works the opposite way too; understanding individuals helps you to understand larger groups of being inside and outside of organizations. Being able to know how and why people are acting the way they are is a part of psychology and understanding your customers and organizations. You need to have a good organizational structure in order to have good behaviors and attitudes of employees. Organizational behavior focuses on the strengths, virtues, vitality, and resilience of individuals and organizations. “The idea is that nurturing the strengths of individuals rather than attempting to “fix” their weaknesses is far more beneficial to achieving organizational goals” (Organizational Behavior, 22). I agree with this because understanding your customers and the individuals you work along side with all make a big difference on your organization and business.

Organizations should be concerned with occupational stress because employees will carry their stress into their work. If people are stressed and tired they will not put forth a lot of effort into complete their daily tasks. Workplaces can deal with employee stress a few different ways. One is to offer a therapist for employees to use at no cost. They can receive a certain amount of visits at no charge that they can use for work purposes, or for home life reasons. Obviously the information would be confidential and only Human Resources should be able to see who utilizes the counselor, but conversation between counselor and employee should be confidential. A cheaper way for an organization to lower stress is to check in on employees and encourage them that they are doing good work. Motivation is reinforced with verbal acknowledgment of doing a good job. If managers can simply tell their employees they are doing a good job I believe this could also lower workplace stress. Employees are then recognized for their hard work and encouraged to keep going.
There can be too little stress. Not having stress can lead to depression or boredom. People need stress to be motivated. There can also be too much stress which is also not good for someone’s health. Individuals need to find the right balance between too little and too much stress.
