HABIT 2- “Begin With The End In Mind”

“Begin with the end in mind” is based on the principle that all things are created twice. The first creation is also called the mental creation and the second creation is also called the physical creation. For example you can look at the creation for a house. Before you are building it you need to create a blueprint with every detail on it. It is important to know where you are going before you are going somewhere. Habit 2 is based on principles of personal leadership, which means that leadership is the first creation. Leadership is not management. Management is the second creation, which is Habit 3. Habit 2 makes you think where you want to go with what you are doing. This could be in your company but also on personal level. If your ladder is not leading against the right wall, every step you take gets you to the wrong place faster.

Habit 1 says “you are the creator” and Habit 2 is the first creation.

Personal Mission Statement

A good way to incorporate Habit 2 into your life is to make a Personal Mission Statement. It focuses on what you want to be and what you want to do. It is your own plan for success. In order to write a personal mission statement, we must begin at the very center of our Circle of Influence. Whatever is at the center of our life will be the source of our security, guidance, wisdom, and power. These four factor are interdependent.

Security

and clear guidance bring true wisdom and wisdom becomes to spark to direct power. Even don’t we don’t always recognize it everyone has a center. In the figure beneath you can see the alternative centers.

Personally, I think I am at the moment pleasure- centered and a little bit friend-centered.

As you can See in the Table beneath I focus on what gives me pleasure but also what other people think about me. I do believe that this center can change during the years. I cannot say how it will change but the direction that I would like to see it go is Family- centered.

Pleasure-Centered

· You feel secure only when you’re on a pleasure “high”

· Your security is short-lived, anesthetizing, and dependent on your environment

· You make your decisions based on what will give you most pleasure.

· You see the world of what’s in it for you

· Your power is almost negligible

Friend- centered

· Your security is a function of the social mirror.

· You are highly dependent on the opinions of others.

· Your decision-making is “what will they think?”

· You are easily embarrassed.

· You see the world through a social lens.

· You are limited by your social comfort zone.

· Your actions are as fickle as opinion

How can I relate this to my Internship

I have been working for about 2 weeks now at the Company Sandd and I have been talking to quite a few employees. Today one of them told us he was leaving the company. He is an extern employee and was working for a new design for our website. The reason that he decided not to extend his contract is because he said he was not making the process he wanted to make. He told me that some people higher up in the company were directing him in the wrong direction, and of course this translated in a big delay. I told him that I was reading Stephen Covey’s book and ask him if he thought this was an example of “a ladder that was not leading against the right wall” and he told me “exactly”.

Another personal example is when I changed my vision when I was about 16 years old. At a young age I managed to be in the top 3 of my age category in the tennis competition. My vision was to become the new “Serena Williams”, I was going to be the new number 1. As I grew up, it became more and more realistic that I was not good enough to reach the top. I did believe and I still believe that if I did everything I could I would have been a good player but number 1 was a step to far. I thought by myself where do I want to go from here with my tennis and I decided I did not want to become a fulltime tennis player, instead I wanted to go to the USA. So I changed the destination of my ladder from a fulltime tennis player to becoming a student- athlete.

About my career, there is still work to do. I am still not sure where I want to go from here and there are various issues that make my decision even harder.
