CLINICAL SKILLS & PROCEDURES SELF-ASSESSMENT
For FNP Students
Note: Performing clinical skills requires experience. NP students should NOT perform any procedure on a patient if they have not read how to perform any invasive procedure, make observations, and received guidance and instructions on how to perform the skill by preceptor. Students must obtain proper approval to perform the procedure from faculty and preceptor. Also, a student should not perform any procedures they are uncomfortable with performing.
Once approved by preceptor and faculty, NP students should take advantage of the opportunity to perform as many procedures as possible before graduating.
As you consider performing skills, do not focus only on technical skills, but understand the rationale for why the procedure is being performed.

Summary of strengths:
According to the clinical skills and procedures assessment, I can confidently and independently perform the following skills: 1. Auscultation of fetal heart tones by using a Doppler 2. Performing a pregnancy test 3. Performing a breast examination 4. Obtaining a vaginal culture 5. Performing a rapid STI test 6. Know contraceptive options |
Opportunities for growth:
There are several skills and procedure that I will have the opportunity to grow throughout this clinical experience. I have assisted with numerous pap tests, pelvic exams, and obtaining chlamydia and gonorrhea cultures while I work in the ER and the family medicine clinic, but I have never performed them myself. The following skills and procedures are areas that I will have an opportunity to grow: 1. Fundal height assessment 2. EPPDS screening 3. Pelvic exam 4. Pap test 5. Basic microscopy (yeast, BV) 6. Herpes Culture 7. Wet mount, whiff test, vaginal pH, Trick, and Albicans Gardnerella 8. Contraceptive Placements such as IUDs, rings, or implants 9. Placement or Removal of IUDs |
Now, write 3–4 possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that you follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
