Textbook Assignment Part 1: Access Module 1

Many students taking this class have already completed Access Module 1 as part of the CSC118 Computer Applications I course.
It is expected that you will redo this part of the assignment from scratch for this course
, as a way of reviewing that material. Submitting the same file created for an earlier class will be treated as plagiarism, even if you are the person who created the file. See the Student Handbook for a complete description of how plagiarism is defined for Sullivan University.

Read pages AC 1-43 and complete all hands-on steps in the tan boxes.

Pages AC 8-9: You are asked to start by creating a NEW Access file named Riverview.accdb for this assignment. You should not start by opening a file from the data files folder.

Make sure that the new file is saved to the YourNameAccess1_2 folder created for this assignment.

Pages AC 14-21: Take time to verify that each field is named correctly and that each field uses the correct data type. As you enter the data into the table, make sure that all values are entered correctly, especially the VisitID and AnimalID values. Any errors at this point could lead to problems in later steps of this assignment.

At the end of Access Module 1, check to make sure that you see each of the objects shown in Figure 1-28 on page AC 40 in the Navigation Pane on the left side of the Access window, including:

· A table named Visit

· A query named VisitList

· A form named VisitData

· A report named VisitDetails

If any of the objects is misnamed, you can rename the object by right-clicking the name in the Navigation Pane and using the Rename option in the shortcut menu.

Textbook Assignment Part 2: Access Module 2

For this part of the assignment, you will continue to use the SAME Riverview.accdb file created in Access Module 1. You should not create a new file for this part of the assignment, nor should you save the existing file with a different name. You will simply add more objects to the existing file.

Read pages AC 51-103 and complete all hands-on steps in the tan boxes.

Page AC 82: If you receive an error message when trying to import data from the Excel file, cancel the Import Spreadsheet Wizard. Open the Billing table in Design View and verify that all fields are in the correct order, with the correct data types. See Figure 216 on page AC 71. Make appropriate changes, save and close the table, then try the Import Spreadsheet Wizard again.

Pages AC 100-103: If you have problems enforcing referential integrity on either of the relationships, cancel the Edit Relationship dialog box, then use the following steps:

1. Make sure that all tables are closed. At this point, only the Relationships window should be open, and if you have any other objects open, Access will not be able to reinforce referential integrity.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct field in each table when defining the relationship. For this assignment, each side of the relationship should use the field with the same field name (OwnerID and OwnerID or AnimalID and AnimalID or VisitID and VisitID).

3. Go back through Module 1 & 2, looking at the data you were asked to key into each table. Verify that all ID values were entered correctly. If there are errors in the data, correct the data, close the table, and try to define the relationship again.

4. If you cannot find the error that is preventing you from enforcing referential integrity, contact your instructor for assistance.

After completing all steps through page AC 103, open the Navigation Pane and verify that you have all objects shown in Figure 2-44 on page AC 103. Your file should include the four objects created in Access Module 1 as well as the two tables created in Access Module 2.

If you have extra objects that are not shown in Figure 2-44, you should delete them. Extra objects can make the file significantly larger than necessary, and having extra objects can cause confusion about which objects you are actually using. You can delete an object by right-clicking the name of the object in the Navigation Pane, then using the Delete option in the shortcut menu.

Submitting Your File

After completing all steps in this assignment, you should have the following file in your YourName Access1_2 folder created for this assignment:

· Riverview.accdb

Using the instructions provided, compress the entire YourName- Access1_2 folder, and submit the compressed folder to the appropriate dropbox.
