In Neil Irwin’s article, “Air Travel Surges 123%! (Beware of Misleading Data Like That”,  the yo-yo effect concept is explain. Irwin explains that the total amount when calculating percentages for a companies loss and gain of income will never be the same. When percentages fall their eventual rise will always calculate to an amount below the normal rate level. Companies growth rates can be misleading causing consumers to believe the economy is in better shape than it actually is. According to Irwin politicians could possibly use growth rates to strengthen their popularity with the general public. This is  relevant during election year especially for a politician seeking to be reelected into office. Irwin says, politicians put  a “head-spinning twist” on stories along with numbers that show improved percentages. People are more likely to believe in numbers and statistics as truth and accept them. This makes it is easier and quicker for politicians to present positive numbers or growth rates to the public. However, if a person understands the concept of yo-yo effect then it will be easier to grasp how this data is accurate but misleading. This article bring attention to the dangers of relying solely on statistics for correct information.
