Research Essay
TASK 1: Select ONE time period or art movement – then from that selection, select ONE artwork from your time period or art moment
1. Select a time period or movement you are interested in
2. Select an artwork you enjoy because of the way it looks = aesthetics
3. Remember each Art-choice must be from a covered Ch 3 Historical time period or Historical art movement
4. In your essay, cut and paste the museum site/link, the title of the artwork you select, and the artist
5. Prepare to research and find out more about the artist and the piece itself use:
· Web-searches
· The textbook
· Info found on the museum site(s)

TASK 2 Research and report = Social Context
1. Research to find out more about the society, the people, and what was going on historically during the general time period that the artist lived in or of the art movement you selected IMPORTANT: Additional internet research will be needed outside of the textbook information
2. To do this – type in key phrases in search engine for this type of research:
There are two different sets of questions students should answer possibilities depending on category selections:
· Art associated with an art movement:
1. What was your selected particular art movement a reaction to? what was going on in society and the world at that time? What did art look like before this movement? What types of social revolutions were going on? scientific discoveries? industrial revolutions? How did all these areas affect this artwork?
2. What are the specific goals of the art movement you see (what were the artists trying to question or do differently?)
3. What are the specific visual qualities/characteristics of the movement?
· Art associated with an early civilization/timeperiod:
1. What is the purpose of the artwork you see in the textbook? (why was it created? What was it used for?)
2. Location created? (place?) Time in history?(context)
3. What was the specific value system of the society/people who created it? what did they value in religion and philosophy – why?
4. Materials and tools available (technology) what kind of tools/technology did they use? why? How does this information explain how the artwork looks?
5. Influences – was the artist/society who made the artwork aware of ANY other art made before the creation of their artwork? Were there any other cultures during or before this culture that had influence on the artist/people who made the piece selected? Explain..
· IMPORTANT: in all answers – make sure to use your own words = summarize and give valid information in your essay – pretend I know nothing about the movement or the artwork and you are giving me all the aspects of the artwork the artist and the surroundings it was created in!
TASK 3
The Formal Analysis
Look at the artwork – begin to see the artwork using at least 5 of the bold type vocabulary words covered in Ch 1: (Textbook needed)

· Give the museum link, the title, artist, and movement/time period of the artwork you are doing the analysis for
· EXPLAIN why and how you see each term in your selected artwork –EXPLAIN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE – explain as if you are speaking a blind person
· It helps to give the definition of the vocabulary word in your own words as you are using it and applying it
· Use bold and underlined font on each vocabulary word as you use them in your analysis.
Begin Writing the Essay: Write your paper as follows
Paragraph I: Introduction (brief)
In this paragraph, tell the reader what artwork you have selected, where the artwork is located, what was it used for, why was it created? and generally outline your purpose for writing this paper. Tell the reader what you will be discussing in the paper.
Paragraph II: IMPORTANT – Social/Historical Contextual Information (most info here)
Describe the artist and the artwork’s place in History/Art History. What makes the artist (or culture) and this artwork important? What was society like at this time? What was important to the people at this time? Why was this so important to them? How are all these values and social contexts shown in the artwork? How did they influence the artist? Discuss the style of the artwork as it relates to the style(s) of artwork from the time period in which it was created. Did the artwork go against any convention of the time period? What was the message of the artwork and how was it received? Is/was it controversial in any way? How has the artwork/style influenced later art? It is important to acknowledge and compare at least two perspectives in this paragraph.

Paragraph III: Biographical Information (brief)
Give general biographical information about the artist and include information specific to who, where, and how the artist lived during the time your selected artwork was created. If the selected artwork is a cultural artifact, describe the culture from which the art object came.

Paragraph IV: Visual Description of the Artwork (brief)
Describe the artwork in a formal analysis. Discuss the Elements and Principles of Art described in Unit One of the textbook in depth. Please refer to this Unit when you write this portion of your paper. The use of critical vocabulary is required.
Paragraph V: Conclusion (brief)
Conclude the paper by offering your personal insight. Did you enjoy the artwork visually? Intellectually? Have your initial assumptions about it changed through your research? Do you agree or disagree with the information you included in Paragraph IV or do you have an entirely different view of the work?
Use MLA format for all citations and include a list of at least 3 high-quality, credible, and relevant sources. Wikipedia entries will not be counted.
