The influence of the media on the proliferation of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia nervosa cannot be refuted. From an early age we are bombarded with images and messages that reinforce the idea that to be happy and successful we must be thin. It is nearly impossible to open a newspaper or magazine, listen to the radio, shop at a mall or turn on a TV without being confronted with the message that to be fat is to be undesirable. Research shows that media does indeed contribute and pressure individuals to look a certain way.

Find one magazine/newspaper/image and one commercial/video that negatively illustrates “skinny is beautiful.” In two separate paragraphs explain the message of each piece of media and how it is negatively affecting body image. Be sure to:

Explain how the piece of media is influential

Explain what is false or fake about it (ex: girl is photo-shopped in photo)

Explain the negative impact of this media

Explain why this may corrupt individual’s body image

Explain what types of eating disorders this could bring and why
