Raised in the System
You can also find the directions and grading rubric from clicking on the “Assignments” tab, then the “Writing Assignment” icon. You will be graded according to the guidelines of the rubric.
First, you will watch an episode of Vice called Raised in the System from HBO. The episode can be found here:While watching the episode, I want you to take notes on the subject of the film as well as any information that relates to the textbook, assigned journal articles, and class lecture notes.
Second, after watching Raised in the System, you will write at least a 7 page response in a word document with Times New Roman, 12 point font, and double spaced. You are encouraged to write more than 6 pages to increase the likelihood of receiving full credit on the assignment. any extra identifying information do not count towards the length of the paper. If you add additional spaces in between sections or topics to increase the length of the paper, points will be deduced for not following directions. The response must cover the following information:
- A description of the episode. The description should convey that you understand the topic of the episode. The description should include specific details about the overall themes and topics covered in the episode. This section should be approximately 1/3 (at least 2 pages) of your entire response.
- Describe how Raised in the System connects to information that is provided in the textbook and at least 1 assigned journal article. Think to yourself as you write this section “How does the textbook and at least 1 assigned journal article connect to specific examples of what I watched in the episode?” This section should be approximately 1/3 (at least 2 pages) of your entire response. Be sure to cite (not directly quote) information from the textbook and journal articles(s) or points will be deducted.
- Describe how Raised in the System connects to information that is provided in the class lecture notes. Think to yourself as you write this section “How do the lecture notes connect to specific examples of what I watched in the episode?” This section should be approximately 1/3 (at least 2 pages) of your entire response. Be sure to cite (not directly quote) information from the class lecture notes or points will be deducted.
All three components of the response must be included in the response. Simply because you include all three required components does not necessarily mean that you will receive full credit.
- For example: A student completes the assignment but only includes two sentences out of the entire response that relates to how Raised in the System connects to the material discussed in class lecture.
- HINT: Divide the response EQUALLY (at least 2 pages for each section) into the three required components.
