PersonalResponses ENG 101/102, Fall 2020

Objective(s): The personal response activity is to get you thinking and writing. The more you do both, the easier it gets. You’re to choose one of the essays listed under each due date listed below and respond to it. Write about what stood out to you or what part of the writing process became clear to you or something you never thought about, etc. Because these are your opinions and reactions, you can’t get the ideas wrong as long as you can support them with a personal anecdote or quotes from the passage(s). Keep in mind that if you quote from the articles we read (it is not required on the personal responses), you must cite them correctly and create a work cited page.

There will be 3 personal responses due over the course of the semester. The personal responses make up 5% of your overall grade. It is imperative that you do these responses as they can make or break your grade just as much as your essays.

Personal Responses must…

1. be written in and set up in MLA format.

2. be 100-250 words. You must include the word count in parenthesis and italics at the end of your paper—this does not include your work cited page. (See video in content section of Black Board).

3. be uploaded to Black Board as well as a hardcopy turned in at the beginning of the class it is due. Due dates are listed below with the articles/selections that correlate with the responses.

4. be written in clear and concise academic prose (the tone should address an informed, scholarly audience), avoiding both slang and turgid or flowery language.

5. demonstrate strong writing and analytical skills appropriate for a 100 level university course that means cohesive paragraphs, language that shows a sentence’s relationship to those before and after it.

6. be meticulously proofread to avoid clarity issues and sentence-level and citation errors.

7. include your opinions of the article/selection, author’s argument, and why you agree or disagree with the argument. You must have a strong thesis/topic sentence about the article. Then you need to support your argument with details from personal experiences. You should consider pulling out a quote or two that you want to use to support your argument as well. Make sure that you cite any quote you use correctly.
