The Chronicle of a Death Foretold

The journalist has narrated the Chronicle of a Death Foretold. He has provided the first-hand information by Nasar’s death and how it ended. The Novel has addressed the names of different characters that have played important roles. Three strong women have depicted the roles of women in society. The women are Angela Vicario, Guzman, and the former schoolteacher. The society has valued women than men.

It was believed that men could only choose girls with how they cook, dressed, how they cleaned the house. Women were not considered to do men’s jobs. However, nowadays they break the rules, and one can find that woman do the same job as men and sometimes have a higher rank than women. Even though women were working, they were still considered as the mentors of their daughters. It has portrayed by Angela’s mother who retires from teaching to take care of her husband and children.

The other characters are the twin brothers; Nasar, the townspeople, the milk proprietress, the local priest, and Bayardo San Roman also portray the role of men. Garcia Marquez in the Chronicle of Death says that men were raised to be men while women were raised to be married. Women were supposed to be virgins until they get married. The narrator adds that the married women were supposed to know how to cook, clean and treat their husbands well as well as their children. Women were not supposed to go to school and compete with men in doing some jobs. The society would blame the mothers of some daughters who were found breaking the laws of the society. A sense of honor was very important to the family members and the daughter since it provides respect to them. This role of women has been heavily depicted by the three women that are Angela Vicario, Victoria Guzman and Purisma Del Carmen who is Angela’s mother (Xgaldarno). These women have shown these roles in the following ways;

Angela Vicario

Angela Vicario has appeared as the main female character. According to the society, women are supposed to remain virgins until the night of the wedding. It was prohibited to find the woman has done sex before marriage. If they were found to have done it, they could be counted as the outcast of the family. It was rare for men to marry women aimlessly. When women were found having sex with an engaged man, she would be punished instead of the man. Angela shows lack of honor to the family members when Bayardo San Roman returns her to her family after finding that she is not virgin (Xgaldarno). It occurred just to their wedding. The family got humiliated and even went to leave to another town. Angela showed lack of respect and honor both to the society and family. The family members got angered. Her mother even started beating her to say the perpetrator. She said that it is Nasar who broke her virginity. Her twin brothers, Pablo and Pedro make a hasty decision of killing Nasar. They found him and made sure they killed him. The townspeople could not help him because he had broken the role of women in society.

Angela Vicario has also shown the loyalty of women in society. After seventeen years when Bayardo San Roman returned Angela to her family, they became together again. After that incidence, Angela kept on writing love letters to him. She could write love letters for every week in seventeen years. Surprisingly, she started when Bayardo San Roman returned her to the family. One day, he decided to go to her with her letters closed. He did not read the letters because there was enough evidence that Angela loved him. The loyalty that Angela had made Bayardo San Roman marries her again despite the unethical virtue.

The society has given the women to carry the fate of men. Men can marry if women agree. It is seen when Carmen decides to give Bayardo San Roman her daughter. When she decides to reject it, the daughter cannot get married. Angela has decided the fate of Nasar by identifying him as the perpetrator (Marquize 59). Nasar gets killed because of just accusation of breaking her virginity. The women have controlled the marriage of society by providing lessons to their daughters and how they can maintain their children. However, men have not been given the authority to teach their children even by giving them punishment. The character of women are believed to be depicted by their daughters, and in the case of uncouth and uncultured behaviors, their mothers will become responsible.

Victoria Guzman

Victoria Guzman is a maid who worked for Nasar. She was working with her daughter whom she accused Nazar of taking advantage. She depicts the role of parents on ethical virtue by taking vengeance on Nasar by avoiding telling him what fate had in store for him. The old woman who went to ask for a bit of milk leaked the information on his death. Despite working in Nasar’s house, she decides not to tell him anything because he took advantage of having sex with her child. After her death, her daughter tells the narrator that her mother even wanted to kill Nasar because of that.

Guzman also depicts the role of women for doing the house chores when living with their parents. It is like training the daughters to be good future wives in the future. Despite managing to find jobs, they usually become housemaid to know how to cook and clean the house. Guzman works together with her daughter in Nasar’s house. She teaches her daughter how to cook, clean the house and how to serve men with food. She works as a maid despite being told that she cannot work. In society, men would choose girls how they cook, clean the house and how they treated their husbands and children.

Purisima Del Carmen

She is the mother of Angela Vicario. She depicts the role of parents of taking initiative. Angela did not want to marry Bayardo San Roman, but her mother forces her to do so. Bayardo San Roman was the newcomer in the society. Purusha even goes further to beat Angela when she saw Bayardo bringing her back. She wanted the marriage to be strong, and she did not want the breakup. She felt that she did not bring the child in a good manner.

Women also were expected to marry the reach men to facilitate their bright future. Purisma depicts it by forcing Angela to marry Bayardo who was wealthy. It would help the women to develop sociological ladder in the society. Purisma was a teacher before getting married (Xgaldarno). After being married, she managed to do her house chores with her children. She taught them of machine sewing, cooking, and cleaning the house. She sacrificed to treat her husband and children despite that she were a teacher. Purisma did not want to do away with the norms of society on marriage issues. She gets distraught when her child shows unethical behavior to her husband. She even decides to go and leave in another town to run away from humiliation from other members of the society. She does not even warn her boys not to kill the perpetrator.

In conclusion, women were highly protected in marriage. They were expected to keep the virtues of society. Those who were found breaking the cities were considered as the outcast of the society. It is very painful when a family becomes upset because of misconduct of the women. It is seen with the case of Angela who has influenced the killing of Nasar. The society does not have sympathy in men who have perpetrated women. Nasar is being killed, and society becomes ignorance about his death. Furthermore, the bishop does not even bring peace when he is passing the town. Nasar is being killed without the concern of the people. He even got betrayed by his workers.
