Family nurse practitioners fill a crucial role in the health care system and care for people of diverse ages and backgrounds. I made a decision to work with psych population.

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced-practice registered nurses who provide comprehensive mental health care to patients suffering from behavioral problems and mental health disorders. Not only do PMHNPs provide diagnostic care and treatment, they also focus on psychiatric/mental health maintenance and wellness. They use both medicinal and therapeutic interventions in treatment plans to help patients. Depending on the state in which they practice, oversight by physicians may or may not be required.

The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner [PMHNP] role serves every facet of health care because health cannot exist without mental health. The title embraces its definition: PMHNPs serve the public by preventing, identifying and treating psychiatric conditions through holistic approaches in many ways. PMHNPs assure mental health from pre-conception through the lifespan to end-of-life care and grief. PMHNPs assist persons, families and populations through public health policy, program development and administration, practice, research and education of both the public and the future PMHNP workforce. The PMHNP role considers all that a patient is as well as the potential of each one. It combines armamentarium of body, psyche and social knowledge. PMHNPs use biological interventions, psychotherapies, traditional approaches and more, as all nurse practitioners do, by partnering with people, penetrating conditions and making a difference in lives. Traumatized people, family interruptions and genetic illness are here to stay, and these are among many reasons for psychiatric conditions. The mentally ill will always be among us and social disruptions such as violence and war are antecedents of mental conditions. There are few psychiatrists and fewer pediatric, geriatric and addiction psychiatrists; these trends indicate the U.S. needs PMHNPs.

Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) provide family – centered care for people of different ages. FNPs often work with underprivileged social groups. Care – givers are involved in preventative care of rural communities and education of people on healthy lifestyle and illness – prevention methods (Nurse org.). Thus, family nurse practitioners develop long-term relationships within communities. Nurse Practitioners work in various clinical settings, like hospitals, nursing school, clinics, health centers, or hospices.

My career choice is work in Nephrology. Nephrology settings deal with kidney diseases. I have great interest in this area of care. A nephrology nurse is a specialty, which is in high demand in the USA healthcare system.  According to the American Nephrology Nurses Association, kidney conditions are a great challenge for the USA health system, as the percentage of cases has become higher in the last 20 years (ANNA). By choosing a career in the nephrology area, I will have a chance to help hundreds of patients to manage their health problems which will improve their quality of life. Nephrology nurses work in acute care setting, dialysis facility, or directly with a Nephrologist; they care for patients with kidney failure, urinary tract infections, renal dysfunction and other nephrological disorders, or multiple comorbidities. Nephrology Nurse Practitioners (NNP) educate patients, revealing the risk factors of developing kidney problems and helping their patients with successful adherence to recommendations at home or in an acute setting.

NNP are often qualified to assist with kidney transplants, helping identify candidates for transplant surgery, and matching patients with potentially suitable donors, help coordinate kidney transplants and provide the required care after the transplant procedures. In a nephrology setting, I will develop optimum effective care plans, I will perform rounds of patients monitoring their state, and ensuring that the prescribed treatment regime is fulfilled and effective. As a qualified Nephrology Nurse Practitioner, I will provide preventative care and will facilitate recovering of my patients. I will guide patients on techniques of avoiding the factors, which could trigger kidney conditions and exacerbation, or development of other comorbidities.
