Ruined by Lynn Nottage and Corrupted Emotion by. B. Lee

Chosen Works, Titles, authors name, time/period of Publication

The chosen works are drama and poetry. The drama is Ruined by Lynn Nottage while the poetry is Corrupted Emotion by. B. Lee. Ruined got published in 2009 while Corrupted Emotion by Lee was published in 2018.

The rationale of choice and how the works Appeal

The choosing the two works, drama and poetry was depended on the role that the two play in the society. The two genre help individuals understand and appreciate the world around us. For instance, poetry can provide a sideways light on the world so that the truth sneaks to the readers. Drama, on, the other hand helps people appreciate the actions and characters around us within societies. When you read through the scenes, you will understand why some people behave the way they do in the community and this understanding can also be enhanced through poetry and one will appreciate every individual within the community regardless of their characters. Ruined illustrates taking sides where Nadi ‘s mother believes that as long as a business is doing good, and one does not take sides, it succeeds (Nottage 107). It warns about favoritism and conflict of interest in our actions, something common within societies and thus an essential lesson for the choice.

On the other hand, corrupted emotion illustrates the individuals’ vision of the world. Lee explains that people tend to dispute their view of the world, seeing only black and white (Lee 2). We conform to the emotions of our soul drifting towards corfonality. The poem strives to establish the fact that in most cases, individuals often attempt to make the decision based on their emotions and not necessarily the realities of what they see from the world around us (Lee 2). The poem has a great lesson on the choices people make and their consequences, a great reason for its choice.

Literary conventions in the 20th and 21st century

· Hyperbole- refers to an exaggeration of a statement. For instance, the phrase used in the Corrupted emotion, “broken flesh, infected in dissolute” is an exaggeration, and this is a convention that is significantly used in modern literature.

· Rhetorical devices have also been used in the two works, even a standard convention with the genre within this period/ modern literature.

· Foreshadowing has been used in the ruined where a success predicted by Nadi’s mother that without taking sides and ensuring that the business is good, she would survive the war. This convention is being used in the literary works through phrases, words or events that hint or suggest to the reader what will happen in the future.

· Simile- used to compare things or events for easy understanding with words such as, “like”. The drama has used it to compare the thoughts of Nadi’s and Brecht’s Mother.

Themes that Connects Audiences

The various topics evident at the time when the poem and the drama were published 2009 and 2018, that is also evident in the two texts are love, for example, in corrupted emotion, the line “Philia filling my heart with philosophies of what love is,” seeks to establish the meaning of love and this is a theme that often connects people (Lee 5). Also, there is a conflict of interest in rupture. Nadi’s mother warns against taking sides and thus strives to establish a unity that will ring people together, another important theme of the time.
