There is an increasing awareness across business thought leaders that people and culture hold the key to organisational success. In the context of major shifts in the workplace, including new business models demanding new skillsets, greater workforce instability, increased multiculturalism and a renewed focus on gender, the complexities of this business function have never been greater.

In this unit students will examine what inclusion and diversity means in the workplace, how to strengthen organisations through employees and how to manage organisational change. In particular, students will reflect upon their own experiences and current people management practices to critically evaluate their effectiveness in these areas. A focus upon the changing nature of the workforce will encourage students to think beyond what has always been done to how they need to adapt to the 21st century innovation economy.

You may frame your reflection through the following two options.

1. A personal incident or experience relevant to the subject you are studying.

CONSIDERATIONS

When writing a reflective essay in the format outlined above, you may want to consider the following for each section:

Discussion – I am telling you – and I am supporting my perspective with research & references.

The body of your essay consists of a number of paragraphs. N.B. do not label the body of your essay ‘Discussion’, rather use a distinctive header for each of the statements or concepts that you are outlining in each paragraph,

– Paragraph 1- the situation encountered

o Chronological story of the event.

o Your initial thoughts, feelings, perspectives.

o Conclusion – which is a transition that leads to the next paragraph.

– Paragraph 2 – Reflective analysis through the lenses of your first concept or theory.

o Introduction – a statement that justifies the choice of concept or theory used for this part of your reflective analysis.

o Conclusion – which outlines what you have learned and is a transition that leads to the next paragraph.

– Paragraph 3 – Reflective analysis through the lenses of your second concept or theory

o Introduction – a statement that justifies the choice of concept or theory used for this part of your reflective analysis.

o Reflective discussion about your experience through the lens of your chosen concept or theory supported by evidence and references.

o Conclusion – which outlines what you have learned and is a transition that leads to the next paragraph.

Conclusion and recommendations – Synthesise what you discussed into a succinct statement – this is what I have learned, the implication for management and recommendations.

– Restate the importance of your reflection;

– restate the main points you made in the body.

– review your perspective or stance and reiterate your learning (make sure it is logical and well supported).
