Exploration Assignment – Module 06
Key Area of Practice: Culturally Appropriate Practices
Your Name: Jane Doe
1. Describe one new skill or piece of information you have gained through this course regarding culturally appropriate practices.
I learned that as an educator paying attention in your classroom is important to each child. Understanding that a child needs to feel connected once away from home is crucial to the child’s learning development. Watching and reading how you can add culture is information that I didn’t fully go into detail understanding. In my classroom with 3-year-old I would add pictures and art on the walls but I didn’t think to add the language of certain children in the room. For instance, above our tree artwork I could have added the word tree in Spanish above the tree. Reading how to add culturally appropriate play foods to go in the kitchen can help a child feel more comfortable being at school since it reminds them a lot of home. Adding culturally appropriate dress up clothes and reading books. So many new ideas I can use to apply this concept in class.
2. Choose two videos from the playlist and answer the following questions in regard to those videos, and respond in complete sentences and full paragraphs.
Video Title: Video#1: The Joy of Reading Together_______________________________________
a. Video #1: Using your culturally appropriate lens, what did you notice about this video?
I noticed the woman speaking in Spanish to the instructor and there was a translator. I also noticed the instructor engaging with the parent in spite of the language barrier between the women. I noticed the parents involved in the child’s studies and helping out with school work. I noticed the educators and parents were paying attention to the child. I noticed that when the mother stated she was reading to her child in the library that other kids ended up listening to the story and she didn’t even notice until she turned around. The educator had patience and acknowledged the child while doing the activity. I noticed positive communication between the two during the video.
b. Video#1: Did you feel the video represented cultural appropriateness? Why or why not?
I believe the video represented cultural appropriate practices on the classroom walls. In the video the kid’s drawings in the kitchen were also listed in Spanish. The teacher using the child’s first language is also culturally appropriate. In the first video although the book was in English the teacher translated it in Spanish to the child. I also feel that they were very receptive of the child’s language skills. Some areas of the video did not represent cultural appropriateness such as labeled centers or labeled wall decals but I feel like maybe because in those videos they were at home that could be why.
c. Video #1: Identify and name an area that could be improved? In what way?
Its hard to say what needed improvement as the videos I watched were mainly at home with the child. In the video with the mother relaying the book in Spanish to the child I would have possibly read some of the words in English as well to help the child’s learning development. I feel like the mother could have asked questions during the reading that provokes the child to think. In the video with the mother in class talking to the teacher I did notice the child was there at the table but no questions were directed at the child only the adult. I feel they could have included the child so she feels supported and included while talking about her progress. I feel like adding music, props or more culturally based materials could be added to walls where the children are taught even if at home.
Video Title: Video:2: _Helping with homework ______________________________________
a. Video #2: Using your culturally appropriate lens, what did you notice about this video?
I noticed the language being spoken was in Spanish their first language. The mother was teaching the child body parts in their language. I noticed the patience the educator had while tracing the child and naming body parts. The educator seemed to have acknowledged the child when the she would ask what body part she was pointing at. The educator gave the child time to answer and helped him with the ones he didn’t know.
b. Video#2: Did you feel the video represented cultural appropriateness? Why or why not?
I feel the video represented culturally appropriate practices by writing the child’s body parts in the child’s first language. By the mother using the child’s first language not only speaking but writing it is helping the child feel supported while learning vocabulary. By the mother supporting the home language the child may then be able to transfer those skills to a second language. I feel the videos didn’t represent all cultural appropriateness since aside from what the educator or mother was teaching the child there was nothing else surrounding them that shows support in their culture. The walls seemed bare and there was nothing in support of the child for his learning development.
c. Video#2: Identify and name an area that could be improved? In what way?
In this video although I see the child is home, I would say add more items in the house to help increase the child’s learning even while home. I would say adding some books to the home in their language and reading them in English could be an improvement. Adding diversity in the area the child is taught is helpful too. I feel the educator could have created or added challenge to the task. Always ask questions and encourage feedback from the child.
3. Name one professional goal you set for yourself for your next Exploration course based on any of the module in this course? Next, list the resources you will need to accomplish this goal. Finally, state specifically how you will know you have reached this goal.
One professional goal I will set for myself is using the importance of play in my classroom and in my home. The resources I will need to accomplish this is setting my classroom and home properly so that centers and toys are available for every child. I would have to rearrange my centers so that they are inviting and labeled correctly. Learning the importance of play and knowing that it takes a full 30 minutes for a child to fully engage means I would need to time play correctly in class for the children. If I need to use a timer so that I am keeping track of time then I can use that as well. The resources I plan to use are the lessons I learned here this term as well as continuing my research on NAEYC which has so much information for me to continue learning and passing along to others. I will know I have reached this goal when I see a difference in the children in class during play. I would have to monitor them and keep notes just as we do daily for each child. By paying attention to the props I have to the labels and languages on the wall I feel it will make a big difference. By setting my classroom so that each center is available with plenty of educational choices for the children to choose from. Making sure my centers aren’t cluttered and that music is not close to the quiet or reading center. Being sure to give children the appropriate time needed to fully play so that they can reach their full learning potential. Until I have my own class room I will start by apply these to my home by allowing more play time in my home.
