In this week’s journal, we will consider the topic of gangs.
In order to learn about how gang violence emerged and was sustained by the rival gangs Crips and Bloods in South Central Los Angeles, read the timeline here
https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/cripsandbloods/timeline.html
Choose one of the following theories of deviance (all are found in your textbook), and, in one paragraph, describe how this theory explains the emergence of gangs in South Central Los Angeles. Describe the theory, then apply it to the topic, giving examples. Please see example, below the list of theories, at the bottom of this post. Your submission should be 1 page in length.
Theories:
*Mechanical and Organic Solidarity
*Merton’s Strain Theory
*Labeling Theory
*Stigma
*Broken Windows Theory of Deviance
Example: The following is an example of what I am looking for your first post. I am using a theory not included in the list above, Social Integration Theory. You will need to choose your own theory from the list.
In my opinion, Social Integration Theory explains the emergence of gangs in South Central Los Angeles. Social Integration Theory focuses on the degree to which an individual is integrated into society, and also takes into account the degree of regulation that person experiences. In South Central LA in the 1960s, young African American men had a very high degree of regulation – there were many police officers monitoring their behavior in everyday life, and they felt overly constricted by all of the rules the police were subjecting them to. The felt integrated into their neighborhood, but not so much into the greater LA society, from which they felt cut off and excluded. They weren’t even allowed to join the Boy Scouts troop in their neighborhood! Social Integration theory suggest that too little integration paired with too high of regulation, with too many rules and regulations to follow, will lead to acts of deviance. For this reason, I think this theory explains the emergence of gangs and gang related deviance in South Central LA.
