Top management commitment is crucial for a project’s success in a variety of aspects. Strong executive support is one of the most important resources for a project manager, the sponsors or the managers can assist in handling different types of unexpected problems such as political conflicts and leadership issues. The lack of standards may lead to all types of issues such as unacceptable scope creek and eventually lead to project failure. Therefore, a project manager should establish proper standards before starting the project to prepare the team for different situations.
The failure of a pre-school project in our organization has proven that both top management commitment and standards are crucial for a project’s success. The pre-school project was planned to set up in our church and employees had started contacting consultants to evaluate the site. However, the proposed pre-school schedule was soon found out to be conflicted with another seminary project’s schedule. The lack of standards to guide the project through disagreements with other teams led to unproductive arguments, and eventually both teams went to the sponsor, the boss in this case, to solve the conflict. The boss decided that the pre-school project was abdicable, and it was eventually discarded. This instance shows that a project is unlikely to succeed without support from top managements or appropriate standards.

It’s harder to manage a traditional project rather than an IT project. Firstly, IT projects could be conducted online, which made members and stakeholders be able to easily access and follow up with the project process. On the contrast, a traditional project will require more face-to-face communications and on-field visit to ensure the development is on track. As a project manager, a convenient and transparent communication always make the job less hard.
Secondly, it is easier to show the demo of an IT project to stakeholders during any step of the project development process, which will make sure different parties on the same page and allow changes happen during the process. For a traditional project, it is not easy to see the product before it was finished. Changes after a product was made always cost more time and money.
Thirdly, the cost of an IT project is usually less than a traditional project. The resource, including software and hardware, could be re-used, and some structure could be re-applied as well in different IT projects. On the other hand, the cost of a traditional project could be non-predictable or very expensive, which made the budget planning and fund-raising job challenging.
