The first thing that caught my attention when reviewing the report is that a very superficial analysis of compliance with the company’s policy, regarding the maximum quantity of stock permitted of a single inventory product, is being made. In that report, for example, the days in stock of each item are not being considered. It is possible that a product with a quantity below the limit figure has been stagnant for months in the warehouse, while another with quantities above the limit was bought only few days ago, possibly in large quantities due to high demand.
In my opinion, the company’s policy should not be so general, because the way it is outlined propitiates all items to be treated in the same way, and not depending on their turnover.
The report issued could be more useful if it also included the % of items that fail to comply with the policy, in this case 5 out of 4175, which represents a tiny 0.12%, and within that % what is the incidence of each warehouse, and each state. In this case, Blanco Warehouse has an 80% incidence and the remaining 20% has Cuero Warehouse, while New York State is the only one represented in the policy breach report.
Generally, people respond better to numbers in a graphic format, therefore, it is advisable to include graphics in the reports that with a glance you can already observe the trends of the analyzed data.
Data visualization tools make it easier to analyze the trends. Excel has plenty of tools that help to create customized dashboards with graphs and charts, but this takes a great deal of time and effort, so the company could invest in a business analytics software that automatically provides insights about its business’s performance.
