In the introduction to Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi explains that one of her goals in writing the book was to prevent “an entire nation” from being “judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists.” In other words, she wants to dispel common negative stereotypes that outsiders tend to have about Iranians. Assuming that is her goal, write a paper in which you examine whether you think she is successful in this task or not. Keep in mind that the most successful papers often do not totally choose one side, but instead may argue that the author is partially successful and partially unsuccessful (and then explain why).

Thesis Statement: The author’s attempt to oust misinterpretation of Iranian culture Infront of outsiders is conveyed through a description of a post-colonial era where a once wealthy and influential nation, destroyed by decades of tyranny, war, and domination with Islamic and Cultural Revolution.
Body Paragraphs
Marjane tried her best to portray the overall image of Iran and to break stereotypes which outsiders had in their minds about Iran through different stories and events.

· Stories of friends, classmates, and uncle.
· Feminism (from veil culture to leaving the country).
· Moments of sadness and pain.
· Veil culture had invoked many strikes against the law.
· Political oppression.
Besides defending her opinion, the author has discussed many major issues of the time that are not much complimenting her goal, but these are many important subjects that should be taken into consideration while understanding Iran.
· The brutality of shah with the public.
· Shah’s attempts to please the head of the states.
· Islamic revolution.
· Marxism.
This story is about a rebellious girl. There is some reason due to which she developed such behavior with time, and it has parallelism with the life of Iran.

Conclusion
In a nutshell, the writer has clearly justified her statement by giving different examples and stories about how big fish in a small pond can create fallacy about the whole society. Like Shah’s conspiracies, political oppressions, Islamic revolution are the side of story which has ruined reputation of Iran. On the other hand, stories of her life, classmates and her family clearly depict have beautiful cultural of Iran still is.

You’ve probably discovered this by now, but as a reminder to help you with your paper, below are
some of the negative stereotypes that Satrapi examines in Persepolis. She states that many of
these stereotypes come from religious “fundamentalism, fanaticism, and terrorism.” In the book, she
addresses this in terms of:
1. Attire
2. Education
3. Parties
4. Rejection of Western pop culture
5. Martyrdom
6. Torture
7. Suppression of free thought and political dissidents
8. Suppression of women
As you begin working on your paper, consider the diversity of the characters Satrapi includes as part
of her attempt to dispel the stereotype that everyone in Iran thinks and believes the same things.
Be sure to use both images and text in your evidence and analysis– it is crucial that you
acknowledge how these two work together in your body paragraph analysis.
Other Tips for Success:
Take the writing process seriously: brainstorm, outline, draft, and revise.
Give credit to any outside sources in both parenthetical citations and your Works Cited page.
Remember that paraphrases and direct quotes must both be cited.
Develop an opinionated thesis that answers “how” and “why”?
Close read as much as possible—remember, you need to ANALYZE your evidence to prove your
point.
Develop an introduction that engages your reader’s attention, and a conclusion that explores the
broader implications of your argument.
Incorporate the feedback that you receive in the rubric of your previous paper.
Consider using remote tutoring through the Writing Support Center for help at any phase of the
drafting process.
