Experience of Virtual Clinical Practice in Nursing
Virtual simulation is the recreation of a reality portrayed on a screen and involves real people in a real-life situation operating computer-generated systems. The introduction of virtual learning has been enabled by significant development steps in the field of science and information technology. This contemporary mode of imparting knowledge to nursing students has been found to improve understanding, information retention, as well as enhanced clinical reasoning. Also, satisfaction in terms of learning experience has been enhanced among students.
In a time like this, when the world is under an infectious pandemic, it has become a new normal for students not to attend learning sessions physically due to social distancing. This has increased demand for online or virtues learning, and most students are taking it positively. This has helped the nursing profession not to be left behind in adjusting to changes in science and technology.
Take Away From Virtual Clinical
Virtual clinical has been invented with good intentions, that is, to increase the opportunities for participants and researchers. This new technology is allowing learners to refine, advance and use knowledge and skills in realistic clinical situations as they engage in collaborative learning experiences created to meet education demands. Besides, simulation can contribute to a patient’s safety while maximizing results of care since it offers students a chance to intervene in clinical situations within a safe environment without risking a patient’s life. Also, the simulated models of body parts, mannequins and demies offer ideal training tools for learning seeking to be professional healthcare providers. Virtual clinical are preparing us towards the future of nursing in the digital era. With this trend of invention, a lot will be developed and availed to the nursing profession; hence current trends are tips of iceberg preparing us for what is yet to come.
Application of this learning experience in real life
There a growing demand for out of hospital care models that have increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through virtual simulations, patients and nurse can interact remotely while advising the patients on which drugs to take and in the right prescription. Seemingly, if this is adopted as the “new normal”, healthcare infections can reduce as the care for the patient is optimized. The ability to replicate real-life subjects provides a form of reality that enhances students’ practical skills in nursing. Once acquired, these skills can be used to attend to patients in a real-life situation without errors. Lastly, experience learned through virtual classes can be used in a real-life case to recognize a patient’s condition very fast and offer the best diagnosis and treatment procedure within a short time.
Asthma
Asthma is classified as a respiratory disease that affects the lungs by causing inflammation of the airways. The blocked airways make it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. Asthma is characterized by chest pains, wheezing when breathing, and coughing. In extreme cases, one can suffer from shortness of breath.
Diagnosis
Once you visit a doctor with asthma signs, he/ she can carry several diagnostic tests to rule out other respiratory conditions. A test to evaluate the narrowing of bronchial tubes is conducted by assessing how much air you can inhale and how fast you can exhale. Also, you can be exposed to an asthma trigger like Methacholine. It narrows airways when inhaled, confirming the likelihood of asthmatic conditions.
Treatment and Medication
There is no specific medication for Asthma; however, the condition can be controlled to ensure that a patient lives a quality life. Your doctor will advise on the right type of medication, depending on your age and what triggers it. In case of severe asthmatic attack, Bronchodilators such as Levalbuterol are inhaled as a short term measure to unblock inflamed airways to ease breathing. Other fast-acting medications include Prednisone and Spiriva.
Long-term medication includes the use of corticosteroids; they are inhaled to keep the asthmatic condition under control. For example, and Budesonide and Beclomethasone are widely used to control Asthma. Also, your doctor may issue you with medication to be taken orally—for instance, Zyflo and Accolate aid in maintaining symptoms of Asthma. Besides, a combination of inhalers and pills that keeps airways open by relaxing them can be used.
Patient education
Patients should ease asthmatic attacks by avoiding triggers that cause an asthmatic attack. For example, using an air conditioner can keep the right humidity and reduce allergens (pollen grains). Finally, exercising regularly, maintaining hygiene, and covering your mouth and nose when it’s cold are among measures that prevent asthmatic attacks.
