Criterion Feedback

Hi Joshua, I will approve this topic with revisions to your scope. “Acceptance and respect” is overly broad because you haven’t identified who is not being accepted/respected, who is doing the unacceptance/disrespect and, and in what regard? Education? Economy? Law? Work? There has to be a specific area/concept to focus on because it is too broad in the current format. In one lens you talk about African Americans, other lenses, you are talking about generational differences. You need to pick one and stick with that. If you are talking about generational differences as your topic, you will need to narrow that down to sex or race to meet the requirements of diversity (see the cheat sheet I posted in the announcements as your guide). If you are talking about African Americans at your topic, then you will need to be consistent through each lens. African American Millennials or Gen Xer’s, for example. Be specific about the dates of these groups. Baby Boomers (born between 1945 and 1964) Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) Millennial (1981 and 1996) You can find credible information here: Pew research: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/01/17/where-millennials-end-and-generation-z-begins/ Finally, resist using broad generalizations such as :”They are taking up workspaces and are conversant with technological advancements in the current world” unless you have credible statistical data to support that statement. This is no more acceptable than me saying “Younger workers have zero communication skills, cannot think on their own or solve everyday problems unless they find the “answer” on YouTube, facebook, Wikipedia or instagram and have to be told step-by-step what to do because they have no reading comprehension skills whatsoever.” Both statements are unsubstantiated, use evidence instead. The lack of clarity is reflected in every lens in the grading rubric. If you rethink/re-strategize, this should not be a problem for you–you have very strong writing skills, you just need to give it more thought. Best, Dr. Royster

Diversity Critical Analysis Portfolio

Introduction

Today, researchers and activists work hard towards encouraging organizations and institutions to embrace diversity in workplaces and other environments. This aims at creating a diversified society that accommodates people from different backgrounds regardless of their abilities and disabilities. Even though diversity is a great thing in societies, as many societies become diversified, it leads to more issues. Taking a deeper look into the professional workforce and how diverse it is will be at the foundation of this paper. Acceptance and respect are among the issues within diversity that I will analyze through the four lenses of education, including history, humanities, natural/applied science, and social sciences. This paper explores how acceptance and respect in diversity in the professional work environment affect society through the four educational lenses. As seen in the chart below, except for Asian-American and Pacific Islanders, racial and ethnic minorities were underrepresented in the professional and technical workforce in 2018 (DPE, 2019).

Acceptance and respect are fundamental aspects of a diversified society. Without acceptance and respect between business professional can lead to conflicts among them. In some cases, the conflicts may turn into hatred or effectuate violent situations. Acceptance requires employees to acknowledge the differences between them, which results in sharing ideas and effective collaboration. Through acceptance, there will be mutual respect, which will eventually minimize conflicts (Capper, 2018). Acceptance and respect within diversity have significant influences on the modernity society as explained through the four lenses. Historically, acceptance and respect within societies are something to talk about. Before diversity and diversity awareness, cultural integration and other kinds of integration were something to debate about. It was difficult to accept people within a given society, especially if there are underlying differences such as physical, cultural, or beliefs. Therefore, approaching acceptance and respect through the lenses of history significantly influences modern society because it will make it difficult to accept and respect people that are different from us.

According to the social science perspective, there is a relationship between human societies and social settings. This implies that there is a need to look at issues in diversity through a social science perspective. Today, the aging baby boomer generation (born in the 1950s and 60s) is being eradicated and replaced by Gen X, Y & Z, and the Millenials. They are taking up workspaces and are conversant with technological advancements in the current world. Therefore, through the social science lens of education, there is a need to accept and respect all the generations highlighted. The experience level among the boomers is not the same as the experience levels among the Millenials and Gen Z individuals; therefore, by accepting each other and respecting them, society will be a better and diversified place to live (Ryan et al., 2017). More so, based o the humanity lenses of education, understanding and documenting the human experiences become key in this lens. Therefore, humanity’s experiences by using the available literature reviews can be essential in understanding acceptance and respect among people residing in society. Lastly, natural/applied science deals with the physical world and how it can address diversity issues. Therefore, acceptance and respect is a physical issue that is prevalent in diversity. It affects how people relate and do their things in the physical realm.

The connection between acceptance and respect and the four lenses of education

Acceptance and respect in diversity are connected to the history lens of education. The history of a society determines how much people will accept and respect diversity in the society. For instance, for a long time, African-Americans have been termed aliens in American society. Therefore, such history plays a role in the acceptance and respect of African-Americans within the society (Durak, 2017). Today, through diversity, many institutions are integrating diversity to accept other people despite the underlying differences. Schools are embracing affirmative action and building racial quotas to foster diversity.

Humanities are an education lens that focuses on human experiences in society. It is connected to acceptance and respect within diversity because human experience with someone or something termed as different will determine the level of acceptance and respect they will give to a diversified individual or activity. For instance, supposing someone had a tough experience with a given race, which translates to resistance and disrespect to an individual of the same race if he or she encounters them in a workplace or a society.

Similarly, the social science lens is directly connected to acceptance and respect within diversity. The social science lens focuses on the relationship between societies and social settings. For instance, the current generation is digitalized and embraces technology in almost all they do. This can affect their acceptance levels and respect towards the baby boomer generation that dates back to the 1950s and 60s. Therefore, it dictates how different generations will relate with each other in a diversified environment.

The natural/applied sciences are connected to acceptance and respect in diversity because they focus on the physical world and applying scientific knowledge to problems within a society. This deals with the biology, chemistry, and geology of life and the knowledge to apply under all these. Therefore, they determine how well one is likely to accept and respect natural and applied sciences’ various views within a diversified environment.
