· Interview an elementary school student about his/her career development (It is important that you do not reveal the child’s name). Ask this student:

. What occupations does she/he think are possible for him/her.

. What occupations he/she thinks may not be possible.

. What occupation he/she would choose if he/she could choose anything.

. What she/he thinks is attractive about the occupation. From the interview, what stands out to you about children and career development? Does anything you learn remind you of particular career development theories? How?

· Reflect on your own career development when you were in elementary and middle school. Looking back, answer the following questions:

. What types of occupations did you think were possible for you?

. Were there occupations that you felt were not be possible for you to pursue?

. How did family, societal, and your career self-concept influence your perceptions of potential and unacceptable occupations?

Throughout my childhood, I had aspired to be a lawyer. I had many dreams of attending law school and being able to help people get their voices heard. Once I got into high school, I changed my career path to being a teacher because I thought that it would be “easier.” During my high school years, there was significant disruption in my home due to difficulties between my parents and support was minimal. I chose to attend college for education because I knew that this was something I could easily engage in. I come from a family of educators; it is all that I knew. At that time, I did not believe that it was possible for me to pursue a track towards a law degree.

Reflecting back, my family did weigh heavily one my career choices and perception of potential or unacceptable occupations. What little support that I did get was more my father telling me that we were an educator family and that is all he would help me with doing so that is what I did. Looking back, I remember how sad I was that I was never encouraged to follow my dream or to choose a college based off my preference. All of that was decided for me.

Thinking back, there was no support in my high school for career development. I had zero interaction with my school counselor when it came to discuss what my future would look like. As Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey (2017) there are many interventions that could have been implemented during my elementary and middle school years that could have helped keep me on the path that I was going instead of allowing myself to feel lost and taking the easy way out. Some examples of career interventions in elementary and middle school are school-wide career days, activities that highlight career exploration (studying what members of your own family do), field trips to worksites, encourage students to develop awareness about career development, and the administration of career assessments (Niles and Harris-Bowlsbey, 2017). When thinking about my years in elementary and middle school, these may have been helpful to providing more support to what I had wanted to do.
