Construction Scheduling
Assignment 4
Q1. A project consists of replacing the track on an existing railroad line, involving 3,000 feet of
track. The old track can be removed at a rate of 70 feet per hour. The old railroad ties can be
removed at a rate of 200 feet (measured along the track) per hour. The new ties can be installed
at a rate of 25 feet per hour and the replacement track can be installed at a rate of 40 feet per
hour. Show this operation on a linear schedule. Assume that the minimum float for an activity at
any location is one day. 40 points
Q2. Describe a project that might not be well suited for linear scheduling. Please provide good
explanation of the project and the reasons why linear scheduling is not suitable for that project.
20 Points
Q3. Create a linear schedule for highway project 15 miles long considering following
information
(Please round to the nearest integer for duration in days). 40 points

Q1: Discuss what resources are most critical for most of the construction
projects and how to
incorporate
the information into
the schedule
?
There are many ways to make the schedule more effective and they are,
Project deliverables, Tasks
required to complete the deliverables, Dependencies between tasks, Resources required to complete
each task, Task durations and project deadline, Budget of th
e project, and Planned time for each
resource. As well, for incorporate the schedule by monitoring and controlling the
schedule and
estimate
the duration of each of the activities.
Respond
Q2: Discuss one
disadvantage
that you see in using a
linear schedule for a
multilevel
building
project?
The disadvantage of having a linear schedule for a multilevel building is that it will require to re
–
develop
the schedule
all the
time.
It becomes extremely detailed that making the network difficult for
the user to visualize
and manage even. The exact originals of graphical techniques are not clear and they
may have multiple original. As well, the limitation of linear scheduling method is that it assumes that
production rates are linear

1. Discuss what resources are most critical for most of the constructi
on projects and how to incorporate
the information into the schedule?
To
complete an
activity,
the CM needs to ensure 3 elements are provided in a timely manner:
Human resources
–
Meaning the corresponding qualified team needs to enter the site
at the intended
time.
Equipment
–
Either the appropriate team or the CM must procure the equipment that will facilitate .
This not only refers to the power tools used for a
job
, but also refers to scaffolding, safety gear etc.
Materials
–
Meaning the actual construction materials used to build. This goes from steel and concrete
to carpentry, flooring, and light fixtures.
Respond
2. Discuss one disadvantage that you see in using a linear schedule for a multilevel building project ?
While multilevel building projects are indeed quite predictable and repetitive, often they are filled with
detailing. Other projects that typically employs Linear scheduling , such as highways and roads are heavy
on
structure but low on detailing such as
interior finishes, carpentry etc.
This causes many smaller tasks that come from a multilevel building that need to be registered and accounted for on the linear schedule, making the schedule to become flooded with activities.
This can me it hard to understand and confusing to a team member. The information may not be as easy to access because of the formatting of the chart, as opposed to say a Gantt chart.

1. Discuss what the recourses are most critical for most of the construction projects and how to incorporate the information into the schedule?
Virtually all projects have limited capacity or resources. Therefore, the success of a project is tied to how well the resources are managed and how well the project is scheduled. The traditional methods of project scheduling have been either the Critical Path Method (CPM) or the Gantt Chart. However, Critical Path Analysis is limited in its assumption the project has infinite capacity. A new method of project scheduling has been proposed the incorporates finite capacity of labor. capital equipment, facilities, and material into its scheduling formula. Resource scheduling incorporates decisions about capacity into the scheduling process using two methods:
Time: constrained and resources constrained. Time-constrained scheduling uses time factors as its critical variable, while resources-constrained focuses on the limited capacity of resources, with emphasis on resolving capacity overload problems.
