Promoting Dignity in NICU Mother
Mothers with infants in the neonatal intensive care unit are likely to display a range of emotions and distress. Maintaining the dignity of these mothers is especially important because they are physically and emotionally tired as they face challenges resulting from their recent and unsuccessful delivery. The overwhelming emotions can prevent mothers from engaging in their infant’s care causing further distress. To maintain the dignity of these mothers, health care staff must be respectful of the patient’s privacy and empathic to their situation. Creating an environment that promotes family centered care and the involvement of dignity and respect for the mother results in better outcomes for both the infant and the mother (Mohammadi et al., 2020). By utilizing these findings, as a health care professional I would hold an educational course to help nurses on the unit explore methods that help mothers engage in the care of their infants without being afraid of holding their vulnerable baby. Helping mothers connect with their infants help reduce their anxiety. In addition, I would empathize to all nurses the importance of being empathic and most importantly maintaining privacy at all times as method to treat these mothers with dignity.

· COVID 19 Effects on Women’s Health
· COVID 19 has had major effects on the health of women due to the increase in domestic violence, sexual harassment and limited access to health care services for cancer patients. Due to the pandemic, many lockdowns have been issued nationwide since March of 2020. Restrictions have also been placed on individuals to decrease further spread of COVID. Lockdowns impact women who have domestic partners as they are forced to spend the entire day with them. Lockdowns further place stress on women as they are isolated, receive little to no social support and face financial burdens (Sharma et al., 2020). Nurses and the health care system can use this information to help provide emotional support through online resources for individuals at home. Nurses can offer a safe environment to allow victims of domestic abuse and stress an outlet to speak of their concerns. Women can benefit from online resources as it will help combat social isolation. In the same article, it was found women more likely to face sexual exploitation as landlords offer rent accommodations in exchange for physical acts. Pregnant women and nursing mothers are also impacted greatly as they are at higher risk of becoming sick and transmission between mother and children (Sharma et al., 2020). Screening for cervical and breast cancer has been pushed aside by COVID 19 as cancer patients are advised to refrain from traveling to hospitals (Sharma et al., 2020). Nurses and health care providers can make a screening kit with instructions for individuals to use at home and utilize mailing services to deliver medications to cancer patients. From this pandemic, health care workers can begin to incorporate the use of technology to serve people at home when able to.
