Presentation (this is not a physical presentation in class or online, but refers to a university assessment category in which material is presented in a non-essay format).

You are required to create an original multimodal text – this must be the first three pages of an original narrative picture book and append it to the assignment (no specified word count) and explain the ways meanings are constructed and conveyed by means of the interplay of two, or more, semiotic systems. Identify and discuss potential learning outcomes in relation to the curriculum.

Explain the meaning of the term semiotic (maximum 150 words)

Identify at least five semiotic systems and discuss their design features (maximum 250 words)

Create a multimodal text – this must be the first three pages of an original narrative picture book (no specified word count).

Provide a detailed analysis of how the semiotic systems in your multimodal text interact to construct meaning through the process of intersemiosis (O’Halloran 2008). Evaluate your text and explain how it might be developed and/or improved. (1000 words).

OHalloran Click for more options (2008) has only been mentioned within the assessment 2 information as it is a reference for the term ‘intersemiosis’. This article can be accessed from Google Scholar. It is a very complex article to read and I would suggest you refer to the other suggested readings as they will probably be simpler and clearer.

Dot points one and two can be presented as stand alone answers, in the same way you might answer an open question in an examination. Dot point four should conform more to an an essay format. So, give this part of the presentation a very brief introduction and conclusion.

Additional Note (summary of the assessment rubric and examples).

Please note, the multimodal text you create is a very small part of the assignment (a total of 3 marks), whereas the analysis of the text you have created is the more important aspect of the assignment (worth 15 marks).

Three marks are allocated to the definition of semiosis; with a further 4 marks allocated to the identification of five or more semiotic systems, together with an explanation of the elements of design of each of the semiotic systems you have identified. For example, one element of design in visual texts is colour, but what are the other elements? In addition to stating the elements of design you need to show you understand how each element contributes to the semiotic system in question. Colour has culturally significant connotations. Consider for example the difference between a character dressed in a long white robe, compared to one dressed in a long black robe.

The final 5 marks (evaluation of the text) will be awarded for your self-evaluation of the text you have created. So, you do not have to create a ‘perfect’ multimodal text, but you do need to discuss how effectively your text conveys the meanings you had intended. After undertaking the analysis, if you decide it was not wholly effective what changes might you make to improve it. If you think it was effective, give reasons.
