A Webmaster has different roles in ensuring that the web servers, software, and hardware are operating correctly, generating and revising web pages, and designing the website (Divisionx, 2014). In this scenario, the webmaster shares server with other school departments, and therefore, the webmaster should create security-related rules for the staff members. Some of the rules that the webmaster should give to the staff members who add pages to the website are;
1. All the staff members in the school who add web pages to the school websites should ensure that their passwords are safe and secure. Every staff member should make sure that the passwords are safe and no one else can access them to prevent login attempts from hackers and other outsiders. The school website contains sensitive information, and for privacy purposes, all the staff members adding pages to the website should ensure their passwords are safe.
2. Ensure that you have permission to use any material you publish from the owner of the copyright. You should know that web publication rights mostly need to be negotiated separately from rights for print publication. You should ensure that the material you are publishing is credited appropriately. This rule will ensure that any material published on the website is appropriately credited to safeguard the owners’ materials.
3. All the departments adding pages to the website should ensure that their computers or other devices they use to add pages to the website are regularly updated. Updating your computers is important because they often include critical patches to security holes. Therefore, to ensure that our website is safe from hackers, ensure you update your computers.
4. Everyone adding pages to the school website should backup their data. Everyone should back up their site often. One should maintain backups for the website files incase the website becomes inaccessible, or the data is lost. This will help in case of data loss on the website.
5. While adding web pages on the website and asking for personal information, one should create a form asking for personal information. You should bear in mind the obligations and restrictions imposed by the Data Protection Act. You should ensure that you explain the purpose and the reason for the information that you want to collect and include a link statement from your pages from wherever you are. This is important for protecting the student’s and the college’s personal data.
