Topic: Corruption from a global perspective

Annotated Bibliography

Charron, Nicholas. “Do corruption measures have a perception problem? Assessing the relationship between experiences and perceptions of corruption among citizens and experts.” European Political Science Review 8.1 (2016): 147-171.

The measures of corruption of particular countries are usually done by experts from other countries. Through this paper, we get to understand the relationship that exists between the measures of a country’s corruption perception and the actual experiences of the corruption cases. This is because most of the corruption perception findings that are done by external experts do not reflect the actual experiences. This paper is a good source of information since it goes beyond the normal explorations on corruption to the determination of the accuracy of the corruption perception indices given to certain countries.

Svensson, Jakob. “Eight questions about corruption.” Journal of economic perspectives 19.3 (2005): 19-42.Affairs’’

Svensson Jakob through this paper discusses eight frequently asked questions about public corruption. These questions offer responses that define corruption, state the most corrupt countries, offers the common characteristics of countries with high rates of corruption, explain the magnitude of corruption in such countries and the manner in which higher wages for bureaucrats cause corruption. Also, it discusses whether competition reduces corruption, explains why have there been so few (recent) successful attempts to fight corruption, and how corruption adversely affects growths in the affected countries.

This paper is useful because it provides a broad look at corruption in various countries across the world and in the most recent times.

Tanzi, Vito, and Hamid Davoodi. “Corruption, public investment, and growth.” The welfare state, public investment, and growth. Springer, Tokyo, 1998. 41-60.

Through this paper, one gets to understand the inferior public infrastructure created by corruption. This includes many aspects such as corrupt systems allocating public contracts to unworthy contractors, embezzlement of funds that are meant for infrastructural development, and the influence of political leaders on investment projects for monetary reasons. A country with poor infrastructure in areas such as transport and communication is one that is on its collapsing trajectory.

Through the paper, we get to understand that corruption reduces investment and economic growth where the more there is corruption, the less the investment and economic growth.

Levi, Michael, and David Nelken. The corruption of politics and the politics of corruption. Blackwell, 1996.

This one gives the link between corruption and politics. Corruption is a virtue that raises serious political questions. These questions concern the relationship between the state and the society, wealth and power, and the impact of corruption on political regimes.

This literature is one that enables a person to comprehend the dynamics of corruption and politics which is much of the time true.
