Advantages and Disadvantages of Flu Vaccine to Kids: An Introduction

Hook or Grabber:

Influenza, though seasonal, is a huge health issue with extensive medical implications in children and other vulnerable populations.

Background Information:

Arguably, complications associated with the flu virus are more severe in children, more so the at-risk children of below 2years, than those associated with the common cold (CDC, 2019).

Problem Statement:

Although the flu vaccine has greatly impacted the health outcomes of children who have been administered with the vaccine, there have been controversial reports regarding the efficacy and the safety of the vaccine amongst children.

Research Questions:

What aspects are important about this vaccine?

Hypotesis:

Firstly, there have been concerns regarding the efficacy of the vaccine given that there are different strains of the flu virus and that these keep on mutating continuously (Elkaim, n.d). Secondly, there is a heated debate regarding its safety given that there have been claims that the preservative used is thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that has been associated with complications like later-stage autism (Mccarthy, 2017). Equally, the vaccine which is in eggs has been associated with adverse effects in children suffering from egg allergies (WHO, 2012; Elkaim).

Thesis Statement:

The flu results in serious side effects, key amongst them headache, fever, nausea and such conditions as Alzheimer’s and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) (CDCb, 2019). Regardless, the CDC and WHO have refuted some of these safety and efficacy issues citing the vaccine safety and efficacious in the protection against the Flu virus. The CDC justifies this argument by citing data collected from hundreds of millions of Americans in the past 50 years (CDCa, 2019). Also, the CDC adds that the side effects are mild, short-lived and thus, insignificant in ruling out the significance of the vaccine in children. Importantly, the vaccine has been reported to be the most effective way in protecting children against the flu vaccine (CDCa, 2019). In sum, the flu vaccine can be said to be a safe and effective preventive option against influenza as there are no other better options to prevent against the condition.
