Critique of Driessens Speech “Enthusiasm”

As an enthusiasm coach, Johan Driessens really knows how to keep a crowd engaged when delivering a speech, especially on enthusiasm. Driessens sets the mood of his topic in several ways. First, there is a huge screen behind him with the words “Undress to impress!.” Although he does not explain why he chose that as a topic for enthusiasm until later, the audience is kept in suspense since he begins by discussing enthusiasm. Driessens is able to create a positive mood for his speech by discussing how Ted Talks allow people to exchange and share different thoughts and beliefs. Driessens also uses nonverbal cues to ensure that his speech is not emotionless or flat. He constantly smiles as he shares how Ted Talks called him to talk about enthusiasm. Despite the positives in how he creates the mood, Driessens makes a mistake with his dressing. He is casually dressed, and his clothing may act as a distraction and purpose. Driessens sets the theme of his speech by engaging the audience. He does this by asking his audience to stand up and undress on his count of three. He then removes his jacket and reveals a superman costume underneath to show that enthusiasm is a power that all people have. Through engaging the audience, Driessens is able to introduce the theme of his speech as well as set the mood in a clear and concise way.

They are not many identifiable main points in the speech. The main idea is having enthusiasm when one does anything. Driessen intended to inspire people to always have enthusiasm. He broke up the main idea into several sub-topics which he does not elaborate clearly. The transitions between the sub-topics that he chooses are poor. In the beginning, Driessens talks about fear, and then he discusses how he teaches kids to live without fear. Then he asked the audience to stand and undress before calling a group of kids to dance on stage. Although the main point is enthusiasm, and he does everything in a way that portrays enjoyment, the transition between ideas was poor.

The speaker ends the speech with a challenge to the audience. He tells them that they should go out there and share the enthusiasm with other people. He challenges the audience to share their thoughts and beliefs with the world. The message he also ends the speech with is that enthusiasm will give people fulfilment and help them achieve their goal really fast. He reminds the audience of the theme by finally stating that he believes that nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. Driessens does not tell the audience to get more information on the topic as he tells only them to do everything with enthusiasm.

The visual aids used were effective. For instance, dancing by the kids encouraged the audience to do things without fear, like kids. Driessens had a superman costume to describe enthusiasm as a hidden power inside people. The slides were also helpful in getting the point across. All the visual aids were clear for everyone. The visual aid did not create a rhythm in the speech. Driessens mixed many visual aids in his speech, and every visual aid had no or little relation to another. The visual aids made sense as Driessens intention was to show enthusiasm as a positive thing in people.

The speaker did entertain and inform the audience. In the end, the audience became aware of how they can do things with enthusiasm and the benefits of enthusiasm. Entertainment was provided by keeping the audience engaged with activities such as dancing and the speaker’s humor at times. The speaker created a lot of energy in the room and at once stated that enthusiasm was energy in people. The speaker was unable to create rhythm in his speech properly. This is because he mixes his presentation to indicate that he had prepared but the time limit meant that he had to present everything quickly. The speaker’s only bad habit that created noise was when he asked the audience to stand and undress. Many were surprised by such a request or command.

The facts provided by Driessens are not accurate. Driessens is an enthusiasm coach and therefore, what he talked about was his beliefs and thoughts on the importance of enthusiasm. The arguments are valid since enthusiasm is a great value to have in life. The speech contained relevant information for the audience. Since he had been called by Ted Talk to share his thoughts on enthusiasm, Driessens used this opportunity to show the audience how they can develop enthusiasm when doing something. There is no concrete evidence in Driessens speech on how enthusiasm can be beneficial. However, he ends the speech by stating that he believes that nothing great was achieved without enthusiasm.

In the use of logic, Driessens is able to use kids in his speech. This is because kids like to engage in activities that make them happy. He calls kids to dance on the stand and that the audience should follow the kids in dancing. Everyone can relate to kids and how they have the enthusiasm to do something enjoyable. Driessens also evokes emotion in his speech. He states that everyone should share their thoughts and beliefs to make the world better and also to uplift others. Enthusiasm is the power that drives people to share their thoughts and beliefs. In his use of justice, Driessens encourages the audience to have enthusiasm as it is the right thing. It is through enthusiasm that people can have the right impact on others.
