Goal 1: Watch a nature documentary and write a review.

Answer the following questions in your review:

·

. How does it relate to the class? Even if it shows mostly animals, there is still plenty of geology all around. How does the geology factor in to what the documentary shows.

. Did you enjoy it? Would you recommend others to watch while we are all staying indoors?

. Anything else you would like to add?

. Make it clear to everyone that you did actually watch the documentary and pay attention to it. It is actually easier than you may think to figure that out on the other end of the computer.

This course covers a lot of varying material such as fossils, deep time, oceanography, weather, climate, astronomy and the cosmos. There are lots and lots of documentaries about any one of these topics on whatever streaming platform you can imagine.

· Netflix has a bunch, Our Planet being one of my favorites.

· Disney+ has National Geographic, One Strange Rock is one of my favorite all time series.

· Hulu used to have a bunch but got weird after Disney+ was released. I’m sure you can find something else there.

· Prime has many shows. There’s one I’ve found that follows storm chasers called Tornado Chasers. It’s pretty cool reality TV but seems to care more about the people than the tornados. I’m sure you can find tons to watch there.

· YouTube – It’s free and has tons and tons to watch but be careful who you are watching there. Make sure it is from a trusted source. You can find good documentaries on YouTube but the copyright fits within a gray area. Netflix has released full episodes of Our Planet on YouTube in great quality.

· Kanopy – You all have access to Kanopy as students of DCCCD. It is given to us through the library. There are lots of documentaries and independent films on the streaming service. Anything from PBS Nova or BBC on this service would be gold.  Kanopy would also be good for you to watch anything else not related to this class when you are bored, especially if you do not have access to any other streaming service. Your Inner Fish is my favorite series here. You will be required to watch the first episode, so you cannot watch it here. But if you want to watch either of the following two, Your Inner Reptile or Your Inner Monkey, go for it!

I decide to watch “Night on Earth” a series on Netflix portraying the life cycle of animals when the night-time comes around. Since there are a vast number of documentaries showing the lifestyles of wildlife when the sun is up, I wanted to see how it differs from their night cycle. I decide to watch this documentary to learn more about the habits and lifestyles of these animals when the moon cycle is taking place. With new high-quality cameras being able to capture the wonders of wildlife, they were able to capture footage of cheetahs and lions hunting. While depending upon what status the moon cycle is at, these predators use these events in their favor when hunting for their meals. The documentary explained that when there is a full moon, the light that it transmits slightly favors cheetahs to better see their prey. But also exposes them by helping their prey see better any dangers that may come their way at any given moment. I found it fascinating to see how these vicious and strategic animals were able to hunt and capture their prey during the night.

I was also able to learn that when wintertime arrives in an Alaskan forest there is a special frog that has learned to adapt perfectly with its climate (episode 2). While some animals either migrate or hibernate to escape the deadly cold, this frog is left with no choice but to sustain this terrible temperature. It was fascinating to learn that even with the freezing temperatures creeping during the night this frog’s unique skin allows it to not be killed by the cold. While it may seem that the low temperature has entirely frozen this frog’s body, his inner chemicals allow them to not be impacted by the cold. With amazing survival skills, these animals demonstrate that they are very capable to survive their environment and adapt to critical circumstances.
