Carry On Poem: Literary Exploration
The poem “Carry On” by Robert W. Service
emphasizes a lot about perseverance. Perseverance is a very significant character trait for an individual to be successful in life. With perseverance, an individual will be determined to work hard regardless of any obstacles that may come his/her way. Perseverance is the ability to insist and be firm on getting a particular task to be done and not giving up. The author of this particular poem uses words that depict the importance of perseverance in life.
There are several phrases in this particular poem that show perseverance. Example of such phrases include “When it’s ten against one, and hope there is none, Buck up little soldier, Carry on my son Carry On!, It is easy to fight when one is winning, With a cheer, there is the man of God’s choosing, The man who can fight to Heaven’s own height and Fight the good fight and true, Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer” From the author’s perspective perseverance yield positive results.
The personal situation that was described in the poem was that of the typical life of an individual who faces a lot of challenges in his/her life. These challenges act as a hindrance to achieving a lot of things in life. It is due to perseverance that the person is able to beat all odds and emerge successful at the end. The mood of this particular poem is optimistic. Words like brave, carry on, better, belief in your mission brace up, etc. All these words demonstrate the tone of optimism. The author also highlights some of the positive outcomes of perseverance.
It is from this central idea (perseverance) that individuals would realize that perseverance is a common phenomenon in human life. Individuals are always urged to persevere no matter how tough the situation may be.
The poem contains free verses hence no rhythmic pattern that is clear. The lines per each paragraph are also different. The pattern that manifests itself in the poem is the repetition of words (carry on). The sound was used to provide emphasis on the message that was being relayed by the author. There was a recurrence of several consonant sounds in the poem. As I reflect on the message relayed and the theme of the poem, individuals who do not persevere may end up not accomplishing many things in their lives. Perseverance is, therefore, a critical character trait that should be embraced by all.
As I read the poem, I could empathize with the speaker. In my life, things have not always gone my way all the time. Sometimes I falter or fail to complete a task or getting what I want. For instance, in the past, I have failed to achieve some academic goals or achievements. There have been several obstacles and barriers that hindered me from achieving my ambitions. However, by persevering and sticking to the task I have always overcome and finally become successful. I also realized that I share the same sentiments with the speaker of the poem. I agree with the speaker of the poem on many things concerning perseverance.
Conclusion
Each individual thrives to be successful. Individuals however often forget that there are obstacles and difficulties that lie in their path to success. People set targets and want to attain them right away, but they may fall short on those goals because of various challenges. Some people who do not persevere might consider giving up on their dreams. This is because they develop a feeling that they can never prosper and succeed in life. Giving up when faced with challenges is never a good solution. However, persevering in all circumstance usually enable an individual to reap great rewards.

Indian Boarding School: The Runaways
by Louise Erdrich
Home’s the place we head for in our sleep.
Boxcars stumbling north in dreams
don’t wait for us. We catch them on the run.
The rails, old lacerations that we love,
shoot parallel across the face and break
just under Turtle Mountains. Riding scars
you can’t get lost. Home is the place they cross.
The lame guard strikes a match and makes the dark
less tolerant. We watch through cracks in boards
as the land starts rolling, rolling till it hurts
to be here, cold in regulation clothes.
We know the sheriff’s waiting at the midrun
to take us back. His car is dumb and warm.
The highway doesn’t rock, it only hums
like a wing of long insults. The worn down welts
of ancient punishments lead back and forth.
All runaways wear dresses, long green ones,
the color you would think shame was. We scrub
the sidewalks down because it’s shameful work.
Our brushes cut the stone in watered arcs
and in the soak frail outlines shiver clear
a moment, things us kids pressed on the dark
face before it hardened, pale, remembering
delicate old injuries, the spines of names and leaves.
