Essay Questions (30pts.)
Answer One of the following in an essay which is well organized and
clearly written. Please support your argument with examples drawn from
the text and make sure that the material has been proofread before
turning it in! Give me the who, what, where, and when of the
question. Length: 10 paragraphs, minimum. This is the minimum you
should attempt to turn in but the best grades usually go to students who turn
in substantially longer essays. Please be aware of this fact.
1. Discuss the phenomena of American consumerism of the 1920s. What
inventions and technologies made mass consumption and production possible?
What sectors of the population were specifically targeted and what were some of
the products marketed to them? Who were some of the personalities involved in
mass production? What about advertising? Tell me about how this worked and
why it emerged so strongly at this time?
2. Discuss the United States’ involvement in World War I. How was the U.S.
drawn into the war between 1914 and 1917? How did Wilson organize the
American war effort, manage the domestic economy and attempt to promote unity
behind the American cause? What was the most negative aspect of Wilson’s
domestic policy regarding World War I?
