Consumer protection laws are generally developed regionally or nationally. There are no binding international laws that protect consumers. Increasing globalization of markets with imports and exports, tourism, digital and technical services, and healthcare related travel require standards that provide protection for consumers. International consumers need protections and rules that address warranty information, product recall or liability, contracts, and advertising, The United Nations has issued guidelines for consumer protection (UNGCP) but has deferred implementing a law. The European Union and South American Trade Market (MERCOSUR) have also developed laws for international consumer protection. (Lima 2020)
I was surprised to learn about the lack of international consumer protection laws. As a consumer, I purchase items imported from other countries and have had the experience of having my children’s toys recalled because of lead paint being used. Consumer protection at the international level and laws that are binding and enforceable need to be developed to protect consumers from fraud and health hazards.
