Description of Assignment:

An argument paper seeks to change the ideas or actions of an audience through a systematic explanation of reasons why an idea or plan is more valid or practical than the current generally accepted system of thought or behavior.  The key to a good argument is persuasion.  Keep in mind the following:

· Know your audience.  All persuasion begins on common ground. The goal is to move your audience from one place to another, not to vent your position.

· Back up your points.  Ethos, logos and pathos are important.  Use a variety of types of evidence to move the widest number of people with your argument.

· Refute the other side.  It is not enough to make good points.  Once you have established your case you must address detractors and show why the opposition’s points are faulty.

The thesis statement for this paper will focus on what it is that you want to see changed and perhaps how that change should come about. An argument thesis statement may look like this: “By ending farm subsidies, America will better be able to feed the world,” or, “Walmart, if allowed to expand unchecked, will destroy the American middle class.”  The only requirement is that the topic is controversial, that is, there is more than one side to the argument and each side could be argued equally well. Value terms (better, greatest, most, should, ought to, etc.) are often found in argument thesis statements.

Organization:

This paper will be organized logically; please refer to the sample outline for the exact structure of the paper.

Requirements:

·         The first paragraph must have a thesis statement and introduce the reader to the topic.

·         Use transitions in between paragraphs.

·         The last paragraph needs to summarize your main points and give your audience a vision of a world where your ideas have been adopted.

Remember unity, coherence and adequate development.  Make sure you are proving a topic sentence with each example, make sure the points are easy to understand and make sure you have written enough so your audience is not left with questions.

 Technical Details:

· The paper must be 3  pages in length (approximately 1000 words)

· Use 12-point font, Times New Roman,  double-spaced.

· MLA formatted with at least three sources.

Abortion Laws

I. Introductory Paragraph

o Abortion has been a controversial problem for many years.

o Women should be allowed the freedom to choose what they want to do with their bodies without legal limitations.

II. Body of your Argument

A. Background Information

o Abortion has often been a good option for women as a medical intervention to save the mother, and in cases where the pregnancy is unwanted or unplanned.

B. Reasons or Evidence to Support your Claim

1. Claim: Women deserve the chance to choose to abort since they often get pregnant due to different extraneous circumstances.

· Evidence:

o A large number of girls can get pregnant at a young age, and safe abortion is important to ensure the process is beneficial (Akaba, 2019)

o Women can get pregnant due to rape, incest, or other contexts that might require abortion.

o In the use, around 800 women die due to childbirth complications and pregnancy (Petersen et al., 2019).

o Adolescents who are at the age of 10-14 years have a higher risk of death and pregnancy complications. The complications include organ failure, hemorrhage, and other issues (Petersen et al., 2019).

2. Claim: Legalizing abortion will ensure that women’s rights are protected and that they have protection and assistance when making important decisions about their bodies.

· Evidence:

o Women over 12 weeks who seek abortion services from quacks are at a high risk of death and other complications (Hirve, 2004).

o Laws to allow abortion should be in place to protect women and empowers them to make informed health choices while considering their personal preferences and needs.

o If abortion is protected by law, it ensures that families are better prepared to handle early abortion, and medical abortion will also be done by professions.

3. Claim: Useful as a population control measure.

· Evidence:

o Unwanted pregnancies comprise 45% of all pregnancies

o 2% of women can get an unintended pregnancy once they have stopped contraception (Petersen et al., 2019).

III. Addressing the Opposite Side

A. 1st Opposing View: Supporting abortion can lead to abuse.

· Refutation: medical advice would be needed before approval.

B. 2nd Opposing View: Abortion has adverse effects.

· Refutation: Abortion is safer than quacks and illegal means (Petersen et al. 2019).

IV. Conclusion

o Women should be allowed to determine what they want to do with their bodies, especially regarding whether they should abort or not.
