Discussion Board #5 – Servant Leaders:
After viewing the lecture The World’s 10 Top CEOs (They Lead in a Totally Unique Way), please have a conversation about the following:
Do you agree with the selection of these leaders as Servant Leaders?
Yes I agree with selection of servant leaders. These leaders focus on the needs of their team members before considering their own.
What characteristics do these leaders share and how are they different?
David K.Williams, Harold MacDowell, Garry Ridge, Bob Chapman, and Cherl Bachelder share characteristics of respect (Schwantes, 2017). David respects other employees at place of work in order to improve effectiveness. Harold has characteristics of respecting other employees. He utilizes formal and informal feedback mechanisms to obtain open feedback. Garry Ridge has characteristics of respecting creating memories in his staff’s mind every mind. Bob Chapman, CEO of Barry-Wehmiller has characteristics of respecting his employees (Schwantes, 2017). He has created an environment where his team members have an opportunity to develop their gifts and their work matters. Apart from respect, these leaders have characteristics of recognition, trust, courage, communication, commitment, and responsibility. Recognition makes employees feel valued and realize that there is room for making improvement (Horsman, 2018). Trust enables leaders to know how to share truth. Courage enables leaders to deal with change and encourage them. Communication allows leaders to pass information to their team members. Commitment makes workers to be dedicated. For example, Brittany Merill is commitment to create a brand that gives power to women through holistic and economic development. Responsibility enables workers to be accountable for their actions. These leaders are have different characteristics. David K. Williams has characteristics of being loyal. Leaders who are loyal are sincere and show sign of care to employees. On the other hand, Mellisa Reiff, has characteristics of communicating with other team members. Communication makes members feel more part of team. Brittany Merill, has characteristics of being commitment while Kristen Hadeed has characteristics of responsibility.
Who are some Servant Leaders you can identify. These can be either public leaders or leaders you know personally.
Dr. Matin Luther King is an example of servant leader. Assuming leadership role in the Civil Rights Movement and choosing to champion the non-violent approach is not easy. He recognized that the approach would not be easy but it would eventually be more beneficial to people he was trying to serve. He showed characteristics of caring others by assisting them rather recognition he could ever achieve.
Another example of servant leader is Abraham Lincoin. The actions of Lincoin’s during US Civil War proved him as servant leader. He preserved the Union during this conflict and freezing of Southern slaves.
