Thank you, students~

Greetings, Students~

We are over half-way through the term … can you believe it?!!  Our discussion board assignment will be a bit different than the past six chapters. This time we will be delving deeply what Chapters 7 & 8 begs, which is:  critical thought — critical opinion — and open channels of communication.

I am posting documentaries/videos for you to select and then watch in its entirety.

We will have four (4) assignment instructions due for Chapters 7 & 8 Discussion Board assignment.  Here they are:

ASSIGNMENT 1:

Watch the video in its entirety and then answers assignments #2, #3, and #4

POPCORN … POPCORN … POPCORN…

If you’d like, pop your popcorn and pop the top of your favorite soft drink, and ready yourself in viewing either one of the documentary options provided for you below this reading.  Each are highly provocative one-hour documentary’s.  You decide which you want to watch, write opinion on, and hold energetic discussion with your peers and instructor.  Who knows, I’m betting some of you might even watch each one they’re that riveting and you can discuss with all peers that way, too.  Please make sure your viewing time is uninterrupted.   Remember to have paper and pen for note taking (Cornell/Mind Mapping methods, perhaps) to better prepare for your opinions to the replies you’ll be posting on Discussion Board threads & back to your peers.

You have  THREE (3) DOCUMENTARY OPTIONS:  OPTION 1 is
Our Mobile Lives
   OPTION 2 is
 Facing Death
  OPTION 3 is
COVID 19 – How to be your best self in times of crisis

OPTION 1

Our Mobile Lives — Credit: Craig Tovey (1 hr.)

The single biggest problem about communication, is the illusion that it has taken place.   Quote coined by author and poet, George Bernard Shaw

The how’s and why’s of communication in the 21st century are diverse and complex. Our means of communication, primarily via cell phones, has created new and complicated dynamics. Have our mobile devices taken the place of face-to-face exchanges?  Is personal interaction becoming obsolete? Are we living under the “illusion” that we are truly communicating with others? These are but a few of the topics discussed in “Our Mobile Lives,” a documentary on today’s cell phone use.

OPTION 2

Facing Death (Euthanasia) – Credit: abcganda  (1 hr.)

Do we live in a fear-mongering, death-phobic society?  We already exercise euthanasia on our pets, should we be able to do the same for human beings?

OPTION 3

COVID-19: How to be your best self in times of crisis
 – Credit: TEDTalks  (1 hour)

“We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.”

Brene’ Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

Current events surrounding COVID-19, have raised a myriad of questions and emotions. How do we process the onslaught of information surrounding this virus? How can we find a sense of balance amid things we cannot control?  The TED Talk “How to be your best self in times of crisis,” presented by noted Harvard Medical School psychologist and author, Susan David, PhD, speaks on the topic of “emotional agility,” addressing these very questions and concerns.

ASSIGNMENT #2:

Write 6 subjective opinion paragraphs after you’ve watched the documentary in full

After you watch this documentary, answer these 2 questions:

1)  Write Three (3) aspects in the documentary that you agreed with

2)  Write Three (3) aspects in the documentary that you disagreed with

Make sure you give full rich opines. There will be 6 full and richly written paragraphs in all.  Make sure “EACH” of the 6 paragraphs are written richly and fully. No short paragraphs or phrases or bullet-thoughts allowed with Assignment #2.  Rich collegiate dialogue of critical thought and reasoning in this work.

ASSIGNMENT #3:

REPLY TO minimum of 3 PEERS in the online discussion board, but realize you’ll want to dialogue more than that — please do.

TO COMPLETE THIS DISCUSSION BOARD ASSIGNMENT.   YOU WILL HAVE TO REVISIT DISCUSSION BOARD OFTEN BECAUSE OF 2 REASONS:

1) THE POSTS WILL NOT OPEN TO VIEW UNTIL YOU POST YOUR POST FIRST;

2) YOU WILL BE READING POSTS FROM PEERS AND THEN ANSWER BACK TO THEM BY CREATING A NEW THREAD TO THEIR POST.  REPLY TO AT LEAST 3 PEERS.  NOTE:  PLEASE SHOW RESPECT TO YOUR PEERS AND POST EARLY FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT SO THAT YOUR PEERS HAVE TIME TO READ YOUR OPINION POSTS AND REPLY BACK TO YOU — YOU CAN’T EARN ASSIGNMENT #3 POINTS UNLESS YOU REPLY TO A MINIMUM OF 3 DIFFERENT PEERS.  THIS IS DIFFICULT ON PEERS IF A PEERS WAITS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO POST THEIR OPINIONS.      SO PLEASE SHOW YOUR PEERS MUTUAL RESPECT WITH OFFERING EARLY DIALOGUE.

Again for ASSIGNMENT #3, after you have posted your threads reflecting your 6 opinions, you will then reply to at least three (3) of your class peers, and they will respond back to you (click REPLY in the thread you want to communicate).  This, of course, is our communication element online and we will discuss in-class too (Chapter 8: Communication).

ASSIGNMENT #4:

IMPORTANT NOTICE

NOTE:

We are an academic environment.  Opinions are strongly encouraged, but it is to be offered in professional & cordial manner and acumen.   We are here to learn and broaden our scope of understanding — to take off the blinders, if you will.  You can agree to disagree, but do so with respect and professional academia demeanor.  From the emails I have received from a good number of students in our class and through the discussion board threads I have already viewed and commented upon the first half of this semester, I feel certain each student in our IDS 109 course already owns the soft skills I preface.

SAGE ADVICE:

Please complete this assignment well ahead of time so that you can dialogue back and forth with each other, timely.  You’ll need to do that this go around.  Enjoy sharing your opinions with these documentary’s reporting’s, and give considerable thought to your reasoning and your peers’ reasoning.

It is always a learning experience when we share like opinions or when we might broaden our opinions or else stand firm even after reading other opinions that differ from our own.

Use your critical thought, beautiful minds.
