Discussion Race and Ethnicity
1. Write a post about what you learned from these videos/article and/or the key concepts from the videos.
2A. If you are a person of color, how do you think your life would be different had you been born white and why? Help other students who have not lived in your shoes try to understand your perspective as a person of color. Using your sociological imagination and thinking of agents of socialization, why may you and others possibly be racist against your own race?
2B. If you identify as white, do you think your life would be different had you been born a person of color, how so? Are you able to acknowledge possible areas where you may have had the Matthew Effect (opportunities given that help you to get ahead in a situation) occurring due to your skin being white? If you are having a hard time, refer to the statistics provided in the second video, Racism by the numbers. Thinking about agents of socialization, use your sociological imagination to describe why most people growing up today (regardless of race) exhibit some aspects of racism and bias.
I understand this assignment will be difficult for some. I am hoping most students will be mature enough to be able to see that they have been given advantages or disadvantages in society. It is unlikely you will ever know any detailed experiences that you have had was solely based on race because that has always been your norm, but to acknowledge it as a possibility is what I am looking for. I understand everyone has areas where they are not advantaged, some more than others, but this discussion I am asking you only about race and ethnicity, not about areas related to economic class or gender.
