Use and Compare Online Scanning Services

Project Objective:

1. Learn how to use online virus and spyware scanners

2. Determine what steps to take to clean viruses and spywares

3. Compare various online scanners and determine the best product for a system

Project Summary: Student will be instructed to use one prescribed virus and spyware online scanner and then to look for and use another scanner from a different company. Student will compare the results and determine which scanner is best for the system they are using.

NOTE: Do this project in a Windows PC, preferably your PC at home. Do not do this on a Macintosh or Linux computer. If you do not have a Windows PC, do this at the computer lab in building 17, room 5.

Do the following:

1. Go to:

http://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/home

and scroll down until you see the portion of the web page shown below. Note: If the f-secure web site has changed since this assignment was created the below instructions and screen images may not match the new web site. If this is the case, then you will need to find the link to the free online scanner provided by this web site and follow the web page instructions to run the scanner on your computer.

2. In the purple box labeled “Free Health Check” select the “Get Started” button. On the next web page scroll down until you see the portion of the web page shown on the next page of this assignment.

3. In the box under the heading “Online Scanner” select the checkbox titled “I have read and accepted the license terms” and then select the “Run Check” button. A pop-up window (shown below) will appear. Choose “Quick Scan”. However, if you suspect that your system has a virus you may select “Full Scan”. Next, select the “Start” button.

4. The online scanner will then download some files.

5. Then the scan begins:

6. When the scanner is finished it will report what it found in your system.

7. Make a screen print of the result page or report of malwares found. (To copy the foreground screen, press ALT + Print Screen keys at the same time.)

8. Start a word processing document and copy the screen image from step 6 to that document. (1 point). Name the document “onlinescanner ”.

9. Under the screen print image type the two questions below and your answers to these questions: (2 points)

a. How long did it take to do a “quick scan” (not a full scan)?

b. If malwares are found, list the names of up to five viruses, spywares, or other types of malware found.

10. You can now close the pop-up window for the virus scanner.

11. Go to

www.google.com

and look for another online scanner and run it. Alternatively, if your computer already has antivirus software installed, then you can use the scan feature included with your antivirus product.

12. Under your answers from step 8 type the name of the scanner product you chose for the second scan and, on a new line, bullet points providing the step by step process you were required to perform to start the scanning process. (1 point).

13. Once the online scanner has completed its run, make a screen print of its results or message. Copy it to your “onlinescanner ” word processed document. (2 points)

14. Under the screen print image type the two questions below and your answers to these questions: (2 points)

a. How long did it take to do a “quick scan” (not a full scan)?
b. If malwares are found, list the names of up to five viruses, spywares, or other types of malware found.

c. Make sure to “save” the document again.

15. Write a paragraph of about 100 words that:

· describes two features of your chosen online scanner

· explains two reasons for choosing this online scanner (2 points)

16. Type your name and class meeting time (ex. MW at 9:45) in the top right corner of your “online scanner” document.

17. Submit the document to Moodle rooms.
