ALEXANDER’S POST:
Every time we eat or drink anything our body uses chemistry to be able to digest our food. The body uses multiple enzymes during the process of digestion. During mechanical digestion, enzymes such as lingual lipase and salivary lipase start the chemical digestion of food. They break down polysaccharides and triglycerides. After the food has moved on down to the stomach enzymes such as gastric lipase, pepsin and lactase break down the proteins, fats and carbohydrate sugars in our food. Hydrochloric acid plays a big part in breaking down food enough initially for these enzymes to work. The stomach is not the only organ that releases enzymes that aid in digestion. The small intestine is another key player in digestion. Enzymes such as pancreatic amylase, trypsin, aminopeptidase, and dextrinase from the liver and pancreas come to the small intestine to aid in digestion. Without these enzymes working together to digest our food, our body would not be able to absorb all of the nutrients we need.
