A Career and Semiotics
Your readings have examined meaning making and the upcoming lectures will examine semiotics specifically. Semiotics, or the science of signs as it is often described, is a set of theories and research practices that scholars have used to try to understand how meanings work. In this assignment, you have the opportunity to see how contemporary businesses are using semiotic research. In your introductions a number of your expressed an interest in Public Relations and related fields – these companies might view themselves as a contemporary take on public relations. They don’t identify as public relations, per se, but in house image makers in a business – such as the marketing department and the public relations department – might call on the skills of companies like Sign Salad and Illume Stories.
Your Task
Explore the websites of

and write a one to two page paper in which you respond to the following questions

- How are these two companies using culture and semiotics?
- If MCS students were seeking careers in this type of industry, what courses and opportunities might they pursue while still in college so that they might be competitive on the job market?
- Looking at these companies, are these the types of careers that you find interesting?
