Problem (4-5 sentences)

The wrongful conviction of youth is not only threat to justice, but a commonly understudied phenomenon in the study of juvenile justice. Moreover, studies suggest that the number of wrongfully convicted youth may increase due to the confidential nature of the juvenile court system in the United States (Bob, 2020). In fact, data provided by the National Registry of Exoneration indicate that wrongful convictions among youth have increased by 28% from 1989. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between exposure to content related to the reality of wrongful youth convictions and legal measures designed to prevent the wrongful conviction of youth, especially youth of color. In addition, this paper will also include information associated with the selected research design, data collection process, the presentation of findings, as well as a conclusion which includes limitations and policy implications. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Defining/identifying the problem. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Identify the extent of the problem with research and statistical evidence. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Thesis statement – which identifies a relationship. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Synopsis or summary of paper.

Research Design (5-7 sentences)

According to Hagan (2014), a research design is a process which identifies the basic characteristics of a study often referred to as ‘the what, when, and how a study will be conducted’. As instructed by the professor, this study will employ the use of a classic experimental design. The advantage of this approach is that is offers a technique that demonstrates a significant relationship between variables in a study; however, the disadvantage of this technique is that it is subject to human error (Hagan, 2014). Specifically, this study will observe two different legal settings which have been responsible for wrongfully convicting at least 5-10 youth within the past 10 years. Attorneys at one setting will watch a training video related to the reality of wrongful youth convictions in the United States followed by the completion of a survey. Attorneys at another setting will not watch a video but will complete a survey. Based upon this process, attorneys who are exposed to the video are likely to demonstrate significant differences in how they will handle legal cases which involve youth compared to the attorneys who did not watch the video. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation (and source) of what a research design is. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Advantages/disadvantages of experimental design. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Application of ED steps to topic.

Data Collection (5-7 sentences)

Data collection is defined as the process of how data will be gathered for the purpose of analysis (Hagan, 2014). In regard to the topic, the selected data collection process that will be used in the research is survey data. The reason for selecting this data collection technique is due to the limited amount of time and resources for the study. The advantage of using survey data is that it is often reliable in comparison to interviews. However, the disadvantage of such is that survey data may not be produce valid results (Hagan, 2014). Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation of data collection. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Type of data collection process identified. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation as to why the data collection type was selected. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Advantages/disadvantages of the type of data collection identified.

Presentation of Findings (5-7 sentences)

The presentation of the research findings will identify the impact of video exposure with respect to how attorneys will handle youth as clients. The presentation will take place in settings where attorneys frequently attend, such as a conference or an annual convention. The presentation will involve the use of paper handouts as well as a power-point presentation and will last approximately 30-45 minutes. After the presentation, a time period for asking and responding to questions will be provided. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: A description of the research findings (identify what you think might happen) Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Location of presentation. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb:

related to presentation – delivery of information, time, etc. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Allow for feedback or questions.

Conclusion (5-7 sentences)

A conclusion is a summary of information provided within a designated time period. This is significant in that it will emphasis the main ideas that were shared during the initial presentation. The conclusion of the research indicates that attorneys who are exposed to wrongful conviction information are likely to handle youth-related cases with more awareness compared to those who were not exposed to such information. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation of what a conclusion is and its importance. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Offer your conclusion of the research.

The limitations of research identify the drawbacks of the information presented. This is important in that it provides an honest and comprehensive perspective of the research process utilized in the study. In our study, a limitation is that we failed to ask attorneys who have had considerable experience in defending youth in criminal cases. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation of what a limitation is and its importance. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Offer a limitation of the research.

Policy implications identify solutions related to the problem identified in the research. This is important in that it will provide closure to the presentation. Moreover, it will provide hope by indicating that practical remedies actually exist in the research community. Based upon the research, we recommend that all attorneys who defend youth accused of felony criminal charges undergo similar training content. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Explanation of what policy implications are and their importance. Comment by Dr. Patrick Webb: Offer a policy implication related to your topic.
