Organizational Development Consultants (OD Consultants) are independent contractors who are hired by organizations that are failing. If a company wants to maintain profitability but are unable to do so on their own they will hire an OD Consultant to help assist them in finding out what it is that is causing them to fail. OD Consultants will conduct interviews, do research, and observe how the employees work in order to find the problem. In some cases a change in management is needed in order for the company to get back on track and become successful. In other cases team bonding exercises are required to get the employees on the same page and working together. OD Consultants are highly skilled and knowledgeable in their field. This is important because the OD Consultant is responsible for creating an action plan and working with the organization and it’s employees to make sure that plan is put into place and is successful.

Organizational Development consultants work with managers to assist with change implementation. (Anderson, 2017) OD consultants come in generally when company is struggling or needs direction with the change management process, and use knowledge obtained through the client to create a healthier, more profitable company.
Organizational Development consultants are not experts in the field of the companies they consult – rather, they rely on the client to be the expert, since the client knows the ins and outs of the company best. The client is familiar with the company’s culture, its people, the history of the company and the issues the company is facing. (Anderson, 2017) The company can also tell the OD consultant who to study and knows the areas where improvement can be made.
The OD consultant works in concert with the client, and teaches the client the process of organizational development by analyzing the employees, using psychology and creating organizational strategy to implement in the future.
