Let’s discuss the reading for this week.
Week 8 –Labor Relations
Chapter 27 –The Labor Union and the Supervisor.
Let’s start with some history – In 1935 Collective Bargaining gained its momentum with the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act) which guaranteed workers the right to bargain collectively with their employers. In 1947 the Wagner Act was amended by the Labor-Management Relations Act also known as the Taft-Hartley Act. Currently, Labor Unions make up 11% of the workforce in the United States. In regards to Union Contracts Supervisor’s play a major role in the implementation of a Union Contract and interacting with the employee’s. Supervisor’s are not normally involved in negotiating a labor contract. Supervisors must be very familiar with the contract to keep things running smoothly. In my experience attempting to work with the union and resolve things at the lowest level is the best way to do business.
Chapter 28 –Handling Grievances. A grievance is a complaint that usually results from a misunderstanding, misinterpretation, an alleged violation of the labor agreement, or discipline of an employee. Please spend some time learning about the the Steward’s Role and Supervisor’s Role. I have had the experience of being involved in grievances being filed either against me or the facility. Grievances are not a bad thing. This gives the employee an opportunity to be heard. It also will improve the worksite.
Chapter 29 –Emerging Influences in Healthcare. The last chapter does a nice job explaining changing occupations in the workforce. In closing I would like to say thank you. I believe that there is a bright future for healthcare but, we have to be flexible and open-minded to the changes coming. Take care.
