1. Provide a name of or link to a specific health care organization. Summarize the key products or services provided by the organization and identify the primary customers it serves.
Organization Overview |
Johns Hopkins Medicine https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/ The Johns Hopkins Hospital has its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. There are various products and services which the hospital provides to the community. There are both inpatient and outpatient services that are offered by the hospital. In the primary care unit, there is care for injuries, infectious diseases, transfer services, various types of cancer, and radiological products. It operates as a for-profit facility which provides these products and services for a fee. The hospital provides services starting from prevention, diagnosing, and ending at treatment for various medical conditions. The institution also has research services for promotion of medical education. |
2. Outline the overall content of the major regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards that affect the organization. Provide the title, section, parts, or subparts, or the numbering system, etc. of the specific regulations or accreditation requirements. Responses should be at least 100 words.
For example: Use of electronic signatures in electronic medical records is equivalent to handwritten signatures on paper; FDA regulation;
Title 21 CFR Part 11
, Subpart C, § 11.200 Electronic Signature
Organization Regulations, Accreditation, and Standards |
Usage, storage, transmission, and maintenance of patient health information should be in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA of 1996). The healthcare providers must be audited so as to determine whether they are complying with all of the rules and regulations that are set by HIPAA in terms of privacy and security in accordance to The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act of February 2009. The payment for doctors together with the cost controls that are therefore Medicare Part B must comply with The Medicare Access and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) Reauthorization Act of 2016. |
3. Highlight the effect the organization’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards have on risk management functions and activities. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Effects on Risk Management |
Risk management looks at analyzing the processes and practices, identifying the risks that are there, and implementation of steps to address the risks. In healthcare, the risk management is more complex because of the regulations and standards. At the same time, risk management in healthcare is a matter of life and death. The stakes in healthcare are higher because of the accreditation requirements and the government regulations that exist. The management of the risks is at the core of the process and it determines if one will be faced with hazards that come with things such as faulty equipment. Medical malpractice can lead to not only loss of clients, but of operating licenses because the facility is under guidance of licenses the requirements. |
4. Identify specific components of performance-management systems—policies and procedures, self-audits, benchmarking, complaint management, corrective or preventive action, education and training, communication, and other mechanisms—to be used by the organization. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Organizational Performance Management Systems |
There are several components that will be used by the hospital in its performance management systems. One of the components in corrective action. The presence of corrective actions helps in having more control on the organization and is a support to the legal requirements that are there. The corrective actions can be used as a complement of the legal correction. This is important because of the high standards that are there in healthcare. The institution can have suspensions for members of staff who do not follow the legal requirements. The next component is reward and recognition. The staff who are doing more than they are required need to be appreciated for their work. The reward and recognition should be a core part of the policies and procedures. There should be regular benchmarking in other facilities to understand what can be done to make operations better. |
5. Provide several links to relevant sources that will be useful as your learning team completes the paper.

Effects on Risk Management |
Saint Jude has a separate organization called American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) to organize risk management. ALSAC focuses on the mission and statement of Saint Jude and manages most of their risks while raising awareness. Because St. Jude is a nonprofit organization, most of its help comes from volunteers. Because there are so many volunteers, there are more areas prone to risks. While training is essential many volunteers at St. Jude are not appropriately trained, this is why it’s necessary for the hospital to a separate body to focus on risk management in order to provide effective safety procedures for everyone. While ALSAC focuses on the day to day operations to include risk management they also bring in 75% of the funds to operate St. Jude. |
4. Identify specific components of performance-management systems—policies and procedures, self-audits, benchmarking, complaint management, corrective or preventive action, education and training, communication, and other mechanisms—to be used by the organization. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Organizational Performance Management Systems |
Management systems that are currently in place at St. Jude are daily briefings on patient statues, active participants, committees, contractors, visiting families, etc. It is vital for the hospital to know who is in the building at all times, especially because of the high risk of transmittable diseases to patients. Outside of ALSAC, the hospital does keep its regular employees on annual continuing education sessions to better manage risks in everyone’s own department. Saint Jude tries to be involved with every aspect of the organization including travel, security, compliance, and security in efforts to keep risks a low as possible. |

Organization Regulations, Accreditation, and Standards |
The standards focus on important patient, individual, or resident care and organization functions that are essential to providing safe, high quality care. ASCs are highly regulated health care facilities. Each ASC must comply with a host of statutes and regulations at both the federal and state levels. Surgical Centers are accredited and evaluated by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) and The Joint Commission. Preanesthesia Assessment and Evaluation Record is mandatory; § 416.25 Basic requirements. Participation as an ASC is limited to facilities that – (a) Meet the definition in § 416.2; and (b) Have in effect an agreement obtained in accordance with this subpart. [56 FR 8843, Mar. 1, 1991] The preanesthesia assessment and evaluation of the patient provides an overview of the patient’s general health, allergies, medication history, pre existing conditions, and anesthesia history and may identify additional health issues. https://www.ascassociation.org/federalregulations/overview https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/42/416.25 |
3. Highlight the effect the organization’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards have on risk management functions and activities. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Effects on Risk Management |
Plastic surgery centers are classified and regulated as ambulatory surgical centers. Surgical centers are amongst one of the most regulated medical facilities. Organization regulations are essential for the success of surgical centers. Statutory basis covers the scope of condition that an ASC must meet. The regulations affect the entity that operates exclusively for providing surgical services to patients not requiring hospitalization and in which the expected duration of services would not exceed 24 hours following the admission. For selective surgery is still surgery and a risk. |
Organizational Performance Management Systems |
With risk management in place there are many businesses who fall into corrective or preventive actions. This can be as simple as education of staff or complex as litigation. The medical field is often looked at a place to receive care and less as a place of business. Before the expansion of hospitals and shift on marketing hospitals were looked at as a place to go die. Now they are looking at a place to go get better or seek wellness. Communication is essential to the quality patient care they expect to receive. As risk management it is my responsibility to ensure safety for all who enter the establishment. |

The Joint Commission Standards is an evaluation process that focuses on the improvement and making sure that the patient and staff is safe. The standards are set to ensure that the organization is taking all of the necessary precautions. The Commission has been known to show up to health care facilities unannounced to make sure that all rules are being followed. The Joint Commission can give fines if and organization is found putting the patients and staff in harms way but not following guidelines. The Joint Commission has a list of policy revisions since accreditations were updated so it’s always best to check and make sure you are in compliance. |
3. Highlight the effect the organization’s regulations, accreditation requirements, and other standards have on risk management functions and activities. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Effects on Risk Management |
The effects of the organizations regulations, standards and accreditations have on risk management is tremendous because in order for an organization to run smoothly everyone has to be on the same page so setting specific regulations and standards assure that the possibility of errors is slim to none. The Joint Commission prides itself on making sure that the patient is safe at all times and that they know that the organization is taking care of their patients. If the organization did not have standards or regulations nothing would be consistent and the patient would not be getting the care that they deserve and that is the number one priority! |
4. Identify specific components of performance-management systems—policies and procedures, self-audits, benchmarking, complaint management, corrective or preventive action, education and training, communication, and other mechanisms—to be used by the organization. Responses should be at least 100 words.
Organizational Performance Management Systems |
The Joint Commission develops it standards based on the feedback and interaction from the consumers. No better way to improve than getting feedback from the people that are receiving the service. After looking at the feedback, then The Joint Commission sets out to improve any negativity and try to make new recommendations to make things better for the patients. That is why it is important to make sure that if any surveys are presented you fill them out the give them something to go off of when making things better. Also, it helps when determining different accreditations for the organization. |
