Having grown up in wealth and then living a life of extreme asceticism, The Buddha found no peace. He arrived at a Middle Way and for his Dharma he proposed the 4 Noble Truths and the 8-Fold Path. (pp. 142-148). This would break the samsara cycle and produce nirvana. The challenge is putting The Buddha’s Dharma into action.
1. Main discussion questions for the week:
Theravada Buddhism is about mindfulness and meditation. Mahayana Buddhism is about compassion guided by wisdom.
· Discuss how either Theravada or Mahayana Buddhism can apply the principles of the 8-Fold Path to daily living.
· Which system would you choose to live by? Why?

One day as Manjusri stood outside the gate, the Buddha called to him, “Manjusri, Manjusri, why do you not enter?”
Manjusri replied, “I do not see myself as outside. Why enter?”

Muddy Road
Tanzan and Ekido were once traveling together down a muddy road. A heavy rain was still falling. Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl in a silk kimono and sash, unable to cross the intersection.
“Come on, girl” said Tanzan at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.
Ekido did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. Then he no longer could restrain himself. “We monks don’t go near females,” he told Tanzan, “especially not young and lovely ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?”
“I left the girl there,” said Tanzan. “Are you still carrying her?”

I believe both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism can utilize the principles of the 8-Fold Path to daily living. In Theravada Buddhism it discusses the aspect of mindfulness and mediation then step 1 and 8 of the 8-Fold Path refers to mediation in a sense to of making sure our mind is purified, trained and disciplined. This allows someone to have a clear mind to focus and in step 8’s case focus on one thing. Mahayana Buddhism talks about guided wisdom then I feel that the 8-Fold path probably can be applied more since many of the steps talks about how to manage our intentions, speech, livelihood and purifying your self of impurities. The aspects as discussed in the 8-Fold path help guide them into a way of living to do what is believed to be ethically correct.
If I had to choose which system to live by, I would probably live by the Mahayana system. I would say this because it helps establish a baseline of living what is moral and ethically correct utilizing the 8-fold Path. I think the 8-Fold Path in combination with the Mahayana system would help establish rules and guidelines for a society to live by.

“Stop and Frisk” Please respond to the following:
· Based on the information found in this chapter related to stop-and-frisk, examine two actions as they relate to the Fourth Amendment and the arrest process. In your opinion, which should have the greatest constitutional protection, stop or frisk? Why? Then, use the to research, identify, and examine one stop-and-frisk case from within the last three years. Then share your opinion on the use of stop and frisk. List all sources used.

The textbook describes stop and frisk as “forms of searches and seizures and therefore come under the Fourth Amendment. These searches are less intrusive than arrests, searches, or seizures. In order for a police offers to conduct this, they just need reasonable suspicion, not probable cause”(criminal procedure).
In order for the stop to meet the guidelines there are two requirements:
1. Circumstances: The officer must observe unusual conduct that allows the officer to think that criminal activity just happened or was about to happen or that the person is armed and dangerous.
2. Initial police action: The officer must announce him/herself as an officer and make the proper inquiries.
When it comes to the frisk, police officers are told to follow a three step procedure which include:
1. Observe
2. Approach and identify
3. Ask questions
However, if the officer does not have concern for safety, then the procedure includes:
1. Conduct a pat-down of the outer clothing
2. If a weapon is felt, confiscate it and arrest the suspect
3. Conduct a full body search after the arrest
In my opinion, I think that the most constitutional protection for an individual should be in the Stop. The fourth amendment states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath of affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized”(US Constitution). In the initial encounter the stop, the fourth amendment protects the individual.

Hello Class!
For this weeks discussion I’m going with choice number two which is African Americans in the “new south”. Some of the main challenges this group of people faced during this time was the development of the cotton gin. Alot of the cotton that was being produced had to be sent up to the northern states like Boston, New York Philadelphia etc. Another issue during this time period was the slave based tobacco economy. Because of this new technology innovation it gave new life or a different point of view toward slavery. In better words because of the industrial part of American history thriving it helped get rid of slavery. One of the main challenge that stuck out was the development of the cotton gin. During this time trades were made from the North to the South keeping business going while also promoting black civil rights. Since blacks had more freedom up north most of the buys or trade took place there which eventually gave more jobs to the early Americans. Some lessons today generation could give people from the late 1800s is respecting each other color of skin and the skill that an individual bring to the table. If they had more rights then the work industrial could have thrived better and technology could develop the way it has in today’s time.

Different Approaches to Diversity Issues (1865-1925)
In Assignment 1, we ask you to choose one topic below on the subject of diversity then use the Writing Guide located in Blackboard to write a brief paper on the subject. Each topic explores two different approaches to diversity during the 60-year period after the Civil War (1865 to 1925). The dynamic between the two approaches will have a profound impact on our history then and now.
As you prepare and brainstorm ideas for your paper, first read and review what our Schultz textbook covers on the subject. Then, consider the other sources listed with each topic below. It is important that you review these sources carefully because your paper should use a minimum of three sources from the list below.
TOPIC: Immigration – Two Opposing Approaches and Views
Here you will focus on two opposing views of immigration and its impact on American culture and life. These are visible in the late 1800s and early 1900s, in a time where immigration was skyrocketing for a long period; but significant restrictions would come into play. One view is represented by lines of a famous poem on the base of the Statue of Liberty. The other finds its place in laws restricting immigration. One might find virtues, problems and successes associated with one or both strategies. You might see elements of each in strategies of later leaders and related issues even today.
