Hello All,

After taking the assessments, it seems my Jungian type is ISTJ (Introvert, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) and my Keirsey Temperament is Guardian. I honestly have never been a fan of taking these types of tests/assessments, but it was somewhat enjoyable to find out what it would categorize me as.

This week’s topic about having $8 million to spend on a dream house can be exciting to “dream” about, but I definitely look at it with more of a realistic approach. If I had $8 million, is this all the money I have? Or am I wealthy in this scenario and this is what I have sat aside to build my house?

Looking at this from my current perspective and income, I would not spend all $8 million on building a house. Afterall, there are the yearly taxes to consider afterwards. This is one reason I would opt for the cash option on the HGTV dream home giveaway.

I honestly do not have a specific dream house layout in mind, but it would sit on quite a bit of land and would be rather small compared to most standards. I would purchase a full section (1 square mile/640 acres) here in my home state and build a log cabin type home right in the middle. This would not take all the $8 million and I would do a lot myself to save money, so I would also purchase a smaller home/land or land/RV in Arizona to spend my winter months. I could retire on what is left over and run cattle, crops, hay on the 640 acres to supplement my retirement. I could go on and on with this scenario because I look at it more than just $8 million to spend on a house.

Running Head: EXISTENCE OF UFOS 1

EXISTENCE OF UFOS 2

Hello All,

Professor Kenny’s speech is about the connection between language and perception. That the languages we speak affect the way we speak. He tries to explain how the different languages help us perceive different things and act in the world and whether speakers of different languages understand and perceive the world differently due to language difference. Speakers of different languages have similar way of perceiving things. Together with Dr. Debra Griffiths they try to explain the use of words; “this” and ‘that” in relation to the distance the object is. He concludes by saying that speakers of different languages are not different.

Condon conducted an experiment on the occurrence of UFO’s to prove the speculations. Condons study has been trying to investigate from UFO reports to try and find any relevant information that could be necessary in the study. He says that people who saw UFOs were people that were mentally disturbed. He concludes that nothing has been witnessed for last few years on UFOS that can be of use for the study. Extensive study on UFO can be done fully by the scientists.

Allen thinks that research on UFO has not been done simply because it faces great ridicule. The study has not been taken seriously simply because they are said to a mass of flying objects, and the fact that only a few people believe to have seen UFO and they believed they are some form of religious visitors. There have been emotional aspects combined with neurotic aspects making the study less considered. From their discussion we can relate UFO phenomena with the consciousness of human being. I think Allen gave the best argument on UFO. The concept of UFO is complex to understand and experiment.

Hello All,

Former President Bush’s claims

Former President Bush claims that Iraq’s regime is a threat to the security of Americans and all its neighbors in the Middle East because the administration is developing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorist groups. Bush claims that Saddam Hussein will grow more dangerous with time because he will have developed nuclear weapons and thus will be able to blackmail the U.S and its neighbors. Bush claims that there is every reason to act as soon as possible since Iraq’s deception s and designs are understood. Bush claims that Saddam Hussein is rebuilding sites that were destroyed because they were being used to develop weaponries of mass devastation like biological and chemical weapons. It is evident enough that Saddam Hussein needs to be stopped (Secretary, 2002).

David Koehler’s Position

David’s position on the Iraq war is that the war was not necessary because there was no evidence that Iraq was developing weaponries of mass obliteration. David Koehler argues that the government claims that Iraq is not showing that it is not generating the weapons and that that means they are. Koehler claims that Bush created a false dilemma to instill fear in Americans and yet there was a more effective way of finding the weapons of mass destruction and destroy them other than resolving for war. Koehler also claims that lack of evidence resulted in Bush stating and restating the 9/11 attack and calling Saddam Hussein names like murderous and evil without evidence of threat (Koehler, 2008).

Response

Koehler’s claims are valid while Bush’s claims are fallacious. Koehler has a stronger argument since he suggests that there are many ways available to disarm Saddam Hussein other than putting lives of troops at risk and killing so many Iraq men. Koehler also claims that the U.S administration has no evidence that Iraq regime has weaponries of mass devastation and thus the government should respect diplomacy and the rule of law and help the Iraq people by disarming Saddam Hussein which makes a lot of sense.

Learning Outcomes

Firstly, the course has equipped me with skills in using critical thinking for problem identification making decisions about a problem, implementing the decision and perfuming an evaluation of the decision outcome after implementation. For example, in the America VS Iraq war the then president of America Bush through his thought process decided that Iraq posed a threat to the American people and stern actions had to be undertaken to curb this threat by sending American soldiers to Iraq (Secretary, 2002). This means that president Bush identified a problem, made a decision and implemented the decision. Later upon evaluating the consequences of the decision it is established that the decision was wrong because then was no evidence that Iraq was posing a threat to America and thus the president’s decision caused a lot of unwarranted damage to both Iraq and America (Koehler, 2008). Secondly, the editorial article identified discrimination against immigrants as a problem and attributed the problem to some racist republican leaders and the government for not ensuring equality for the small business immigrant owners. In this case, the republicans chose to discriminate against these small business immigrant owners. It is also worth noting that the writer did not fully unlike critical thinking as the article does not highlight any other factors that contribute to the perceived discrimination. In other terms, I would utilize the skills of critical thinking and substantive research to enlighten the process of decision making so that the decisions that are made are effective and impactful enough to achieve the intended objective that it was made for during the analysis of its implementation (Hussung, 2017) .

Running head: ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF A DECISION 1

ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF A DECISION 3

Hello All,

Ethical decision making is the application of ethical principles to evaluate and chose alternatives. The best alternative should be selected when making such decisions. The requirements for making ethical decisions include competency, consciousness, and commitment. Competency is the collection and evaluation of information, and this leads to the development of alternatives (Bazerman & Sezer, 2016). The alternatives are the ones that lead to risks and consequences. Consistency and application of moral convictions to behavior are what is called consciousness, while the desire to do the bright thing is commitment.

Good decisions must be both effective and ethical. Ethical decisions are the ones that demonstrate responsibility and trust. Besides, they also show fairness, consistency, and good citizenship. Effective decisions accomplish what a person wants and help them to advance their purposes. Infectivity results when a choice leads to results that are unintended and undesirable (Bazerman & Sezer, 2016). For a person to make effective decisions, they have to make choices that will enable them to reach their goals. It is thus essential to understand the difference between long-term and short term goals.

In the United States, the law to execute people after committing certain crimes was not there. This is because the level of crime was low. Only petty crimes were being committed during that period. There came a time when the death penalty was introduced for those who were found guilty of committing murder (Caplan, 2016). This led to demonstrations being held as people were demanding the removal of the death penalty. There were these people who were saying that death punishment is unusual and is a violation of the constitution. It is crucial to make decisions that will not have severe ethical implications. This can be achieved through critical thinking and consultation.

Credibility of a Source of Information

BUSN410: Critical Thinking for Business Decisions

There are many sources of information, which are not always easy to assess their credibility. Evaluating which source of information is critical in everyday life; in school, workplaces, or even every aspect of our lives. Analyzing which source is credible is important because it enables one to come up with a source of information that can be trusted (Go, 2016). This is because there are various sources of information which prove to be very complicated, and this makes it quite difficult to evaluate which source to trust. Besides, coming up with a credible research also is dependent on the source of information used. When credible sources are used to support the view of the researcher, the findings are also trustworthy. The availability and accessibility of the internet materials exposes us to various sources of information from various authors and experts, but this does not qualify them to be credible. It is important to possess the necessary technical skills that will make it easy to evaluate the credibility of a source of information. Generally, the credibility of a specific source is highly dependent on the credibility of the author, the organization, or the publishing site. The following criteria may be employed to evaluate the credibility of a source of information.

1. Publisher: The reputation of the organization involved in the publishing the source needs to be determined in order to assess the credibility of the source (Lecheler, 2016). A press that is attached to an academic institution is believed to produce a more credible source.

2. Content: The presented information in a source should not only indicate the opinion of the author but should also recognize other sources of information about the same topic. The source of information should be brief and straight to the point to avoid frustrating the users who want to use the information. The source is considered to be credible if it is possible to get relevant information within the shortest period of time.

3. Time: Another important criterion to consider is the time of publication. A credible source of information should be current. This is because areas of research, especially in the field of research require sources to be current, although the old sources can be used for background searches. However, the area of technology requires the information to be current for it to be classified as current.

4. Authority: The author of the information should have credential in the field which they are writing about. The author of the information needs to have credentials of information in the particular field for it to be credible, and it is possible to be contacted for any clarifications.

5. The Audience: It is also important for the source to determine the intended audience of the information. This helps in determine the tone of the information, the depth to avoid cases of misinterpretation in case the information is too specialized. The audience can be determined by looking at the index, table of content, and preface.

6. Reference List: Another important criterion for determining credibility of a source of information is to look at the list of the work cited. Credible sources that have been used will also result in credible and reliable information.

7. Identification of bias: the source can be biased if the author of the source to be strongly or emotionally attached to the subject matter of the topic. If such a scenario appears to happen the credibility of the source is compromised because it will not present the information in a fair manner.

8. Reviews: What other people say about the source is quite important when determining the credibility of the source. This will help the user of the information determine whether there is controversy with the particular source of information. If it proves to be controversial, it will be important to avoid such a source.

9. Accuracy: A source that presents accurate information is considered to be credible. It is also important to compare the source with some other important information held regarding the same tropic (Sbaffi, 2017). This is important because it shows whether the information under consideration is correct, and hence determines the credibility of the source.

10. Awards and sources of fund: he sources of funds to carry out a given research and the awards won also need to be evaluated to determine the potential of influencing the research outcome of the given subject. The awards won and the organizations presenting these awards need to be determined for the source to be deemed credible.

DECISION MAKING

DECISION MAKING

Hello All,

The success or failure of any business is most reliant on the type of decisions that are made within the company or organization. As such when making a business decision there are several steps that can be used to evaluate the decisions. First is the ease of implementation whereby the decisions made should be easy to implement although some decisions are complex in nature they should not be far-fetched but rather have ways in which the decision can be implemented. Second is the cost whereby the overall cost of implementing a decision should be as minimal as possible. Third is the decisions ability to be modified, scaled and flexed as such the decision made should not be highly fixated but rather allow room for modification and scalability. Fourth is assessing the decisions risk levels although businesses face risks all the time I the risk level of a decision should be minimized as much as possible (Cox, 2015). other key steps to undertake is clearly defining a problem whereby the views of others concerning the issue can be sought so as to gain different perspectives of the problem. Additionally, the decision made should be in line with the business strategic agenda and also after identifying a solution, other alternative solutions can be drawn so that there are several solutions and the best of them is implemented (Lannon, 2012).

In order to evaluate it the decision was ethical, it would necessitate an evaluation of the decisions ability to sustain and generate must, show respect, responsibility, fairness, and caring. Additionally, by filtering the consequences and evaluating whether it violates any ethical principle and eliminate any unethical options that may arise (Josephson Institute of Ethics, 2016).

Advertising to Children

BUSN410: Critical Thinking for Business Decisions

1

Advertising to children
Advertisers face an ethical dilemma as they market to children.
They are trying to make sales while at the same time, manipulate young, impressionable children (Harris, 2009).
Children feel that they need the comfort and status that comes from the products that are being advertised.
When doing advertisements to children, advertisers should avoid crossing the ethical lines (Kraak, 2010).

Many advertisers are faced by ethical dilemma as they market to children. They try to impress children and make them desire the status and comfort displayed. Advertisers should avoid crossing ethical path.
2

Arguments against advertising to children
Frustration of parents
Children pressure parents to buy them the products they saw in the advertisements.
Some parents tend to give in to the demands of the children so that they can satisfy them (Harris, 2009).
They want to make their children fit with others who have such items in school.
Some of the parents do not even have the money to buy the things demanded by their children.
It has been observed that some of the parents borrow money to make their children happy
On the other hand, some of the parents may refuse to buy the products.

One of the arguments against advertisements to children is frustration to parents. There are parents who give in to the demands of their children so as to satisfy them. However, some do not give in to the children’s demands.
3

Altering opinion
Advertisements shape the opinion of children on specific issues.
For example, advertisements related to alcohol make children admire to enjoy alcohol also (Harris, 2009).
Such adverts make children start abusing drugs.
In the long run, it becomes difficult for children to leave such behaviors (Gunter, 2019).
Parents get stressed due to the bad behavior of their children. That is why some get hypertension.
A lot of resources are used by parents to take their children to rehabilitation centers to try and make them reform.
Some of the children relapse even after being taken to rehabilitation centers.

The opinion of children is shaped by the adverts they see on television. That is why some of them indulge in drugs and substance abuse.
4

Damage to the health of children
Some advertisements lure children into eating unhealthy products.
Processed foods are advertised in a way that makes them delectable (Kraak, 2010).
Consumption of such foods is making children suffer from nutrient deficiencies.
Besides, they also suffer from obesity.
Studies done have shown that the rate of obesity among children is increasing at an alarming rate (Gunter, 2019).
Actions need to be taken to curb this issue so that the prevalence of lifestyle diseases can be reduced.

In addition, the health of children is affected when they eat unhealthy foods being advertised. That is why lifestyle diseases are on the rise.
5

Materialism
Television advertisements make children believe that they must always have such products for them to feel happy and satisfied (Gunter, 2019).
They become sad and angry when they cannot access such items.
This makes children develop with a culture of materialism.
Violence
Some advertisements display violent acts. Thus, children adopt such behaviors (Harris, 2009).
They become harsh violence against other children.

The other consequence of advertisement to children is materialism. Children develop a culture if only being happy when they have access to certain items. Also, the advertisements make children to be violent.
6

Arguments for advertisement to children.
Creation of awareness to consumers
Advertisements are meant to create awareness on certain products.
Children are also part of consumers since there are products intended to be for them exclusively (Gunter, 2009).
Such products include study materials.
Learning skills
Advertisements make children learn about various things.
Children nowadays cannot be persuaded easily since they are smart.

One of the arguments for advertisement to children is creation of awareness to children since they are part of consumers. Children of nowadays are also not easily manipulated because they are intelligent.
7

Learning skills
Advertisements make children learn about various things.
Children nowadays cannot be persuaded easily since they are smart.
They can see beyond the good that everyone talks about them.
They can avoid certain products after they are deemed to be bad (Harris, 2009).

Children of nowadays are intelligent and are able to differentiate between good and bad.
8

Parents should teach their children to differentiate
Parents have to teach their children to distinguish between good and bad (Gunter, 2019).
Also, they should teach them to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy.

Parents should be able to make their children differentiate between good and bad. Children should also be taught to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy products.
9

Parents should offer guidance to their children
It is the mandate of parents to guide their children to understand reality and fiction (Kraak, 2010).
They should help their children to overcome the persuasiveness of the adverts.

Parents should guide their children so that they can be able to know the different reality and fiction.
10

Validity of the arguments
The argument that is against advertisements to children is not realistic.
There is no way the children can be excluded from watching the TV so that they do not see advertisements.
The argument that is for the advertisement to children is more compelling.
Parents must guide their children on adverts.
They should help them to differentiate between good and bad.

I support the argument for advertisement to children. This is because parents are the ones mandated to guide children what is good and bad.

EFFECTS OF INTERNET 3

Hello All,

The invention of the Internet has brought several alternatives for the customers. The customers can focus on the lowest prices and the highest quality for the product of their preference. The Internet also availed different options for consumers to satisfy their needs. Besides, the customers’ purchasing power has been boosted since they can purchase a product that suits their needs and from any part of the world (Jiang, 2019). The Internet has changed the consumer mindset because they never focus on a single market, but they can find the product they need from any part of the globe and different sellers, thus enhancing their choice for the highest quality.

Before the introduction of the Internet, the lives of customers were modest, orderly, and effective. Customers’ thinking has been changed by the introduction of the internet and the globalization has taken course (Brick, 2017). This has changed the way customers think and behave when it comes to making purchasing decisions. With the introduction of the Internet, customers became more knowledgeable about the characteristics of the products, quality, and the various alternatives available in the market, which has increased their choices by making various options available. The invention has availed several tools, which customers can use to compare different options in the market of the Internet. The customers can make more informed purchase decisions.

The Internet has several benefits for customers. To begin with, customers are always updated about new market trends and technology (Laukkanen, 2016). The online platform makes it easier for customers to compare different products and choose the ones that suit their needs. The information regarding a product is clear, transparent, and consistent. There are cheaper options, and customers can easily track their purchases.

Some of the drawbacks associated with shopping online include the inherent risk of compromise of customer information such as credit cards being easily accessible by hackers. There is likelihood that customer privacy is not guaranteed. Costs are not disclosed fully.

BUSN410: Critical Thinking for Business Decisions

Introduction

The success of a business depends on many factors in the environment. The implication of the factors like technology is significantly dependent on the decision-making system used by the management. Among the many factors affecting the performance of business organizations, technology happens to be one of the main factors. There have been discussions for quite a long period of time investors, entrepreneurs and managers trying to examine the adverse implications the technology element has brought in the business (Blanco, 2016). It is quite true that technology has two sides in the business organizations. Despite the many reasons on the negative effects technology has brought in business, it is quite clear that the direction the effect takes is dependent on the decision-making systems on the technology and the implementation strategies.

Role of Decision-Making in Technology Effectiveness in Business

Technology and its related effects are timely issues in the business sector. The management and other stakeholders in the business world give technology key priority in the strategic formulations. Technology is one of the key elements the business organizations use to gain competitive advantage in the market and the industry. In as much as this element is so important and plays crucial role in ensuring the success of the business, decision making tool determines the direction it goes with its impacts. When the decision-making system is effective and sound, the implementation process of the technological strategies will work out effectively. So basically, when the decision-making process is well structured, the technology will prove to be effective and beneficial to the business.

There is need to have the right resources in the business organization that will facilitate the implementation of the technological needs and strategies. The resources are also needed to ensure the decision-making process is effective in the business organization. Technology is normally brought in to ensure that the business processes are enhanced, and the productivity improved. The benefits that technology comes with in business are so many and, in many occasions, they are quite challenging to install. The business management need to make sound decision and gather the right resources to initiate the implementation. The resources are needed in decision-making process which include the right personnel to make recommendations. In order for the technology to work out effective for the business, it is important to have the quality resources. The challenges like leakages in the systems and some information getting to the wrong hands in many cases is as a result of the inefficient resources.

The nature of the business determines the type of technology that is used to improve its operations. The management, therefore, needs to properly evaluate the decision-making process and align it with the technology to be put in place. There are cases where the decision-making system is so poor, they end up coming up with sloppy strategies on the technology application in business which brings problems to the business (Chang, 2016). When the decision has been made poorly and the technology ends up costing the business more than they bargained for, the blame comes back to the technology tool and not the poor system.

The Effect of the Implementation on the Success of Technology in business.

Besides the crucial role played by technology in the business success, the approach used by the management to initiate the implementation is also important in determining the effectiveness of the tool. The theoretical aspect of the technology alone is not enough to make the business succeed. The idea needs to be implemented or put into practice appropriately, when it is not properly implemented there are high chances of failure. The business management should therefore come up with an effective implementation plan to ensure they comprehensively optimize the benefits of technology in the business. Among the benefits that technology has brought include enhanced communication, increased efficiency and productivity, improved mobility, and reduced business costs. Efficiency is enhanced because operations are run efficiently with the use of technology. Use of computer that has high speed enables staff members to discuss and implement business ideas. Various tasks of the business are tackled without going to the business premises. Time and money are saved in the process and thus achieving cost-effectiveness. How companies work to achieve their goals has changed with the introduction of technology. Different machines that are used have made it possible to accomplish tasks swiftly and thus increasing productivity.

Technology has also made it possible for employees to be connected and talk about business any time they want to. They can communicate via mobile phones, emails, or social media. Excellent communication also makes employees be able to air their grievances to the management. The management then addresses the grievances that are pressing and genuine. Business meetings are also conducted online when managers are not able to do so physically. For instance, when managers are out of the country for business. The latest apps and high-speed internet enhance such online meetings which are thus conducted quickly and effectively. Some services are also offered through the use of technology. Various processes in businesses are also automated.

Technology helps to reduce costs by reducing the number of workers in a company. For example, the use of software for maintenance management makes asset failure to reduce, and hence costs that are incurred are low. Travel costs have also been eliminated by coming up with communication solutions for overseas clients. There is no traveling to meet clients and discuss various business matters anymore. Technology has gone through so much advancement over the years and has come out to be so important to business (Hirshleifer, 2018). It is therefore important to come up with an effective implementation plan to ensure the technology is well placed to benefit the business.

An implementation plan that has properly defined and availed the resources needed to bring in the technology into the business is key for the success of the technology. It is important to gather the right resources and put them together to be used in the implementation process. When the resources are available it is quite easy to implement the technology and make it work effectively for the business (Spithoven, 2015). Inefficient resources do not allow the implementation process to be done conclusively. This may be quite challenging as it brings in incomplete technology in the business which makes both the technology and the business vulnerable. Some of the challenges and the weaknesses that make technology be painted dangerous in the business is due to poor implementation. It is therefore important to come up with a sound implementation plan.

Conclusion

Technology is an important part of business in the current world; despite some challenges it faces in the mission to improve the business state. The two main ways that can be used to fix the challenges are the decision making and implementation plan. The manner the organization handles the decision-making process and the approach followed in decision making are central in making the plan effective. Technology has been at the centre of the transformations and developments taking place in the business world. There have been so many forces to the tool in form of challenges which can actually be fixed.
